- Crystar combines a stunning supernatural setting with simple hack-and-slash fighting to draw you through a complex and profound plot that bounces betweens realms.
Kirstie Summers · May 02, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - It’s best enjoyed in short bursts rather than playing through it in a single weekend. The clear highlight here is the narrative, which touches upon difficult themes and ends up being a heartbreaking tale about the beauty that can be found in grief. Performance-wise, Crystar is by far the best title NIS has brought to the Switch. It’s a shame that the gameplay itself doesn’t quite live up to the standard that Crystar has set for itself with its story, visuals and audio, but the good definitely outweighs the bad here.
SebastiaanRaats · Apr 17, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - This game is an emotionally driven journey that explores the themes of death and tragedy. The lack of crucial quality of life adjustments, such as selling items whenever, does hold it back by making mechanics tedious when they don’t need to be. For that, I proclaim, while definitely recommended, to grab it at a slightly lower price.
FerniWrites · Mar 29, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Crystar is an excellent story wedged between way too much repetitive and meaningless combat inside gorgeous yet long-winded dungeons. The non-stop button mashing fights add no value or depth to the story except for the simple reason to progress. Unfortunately, what initially started with a shocking plot and opening unfolded quickly into a tedious gaming experience.
Ted Hazell · Mar 26, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Despite the usual pains of being a Switch port, Crystar finds a new home on this console. Every system of this moody JRPG provides a unique experience that you will be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.
Nathan Mejia · Mar 25, 2022 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - Crystar pairs an original and compelling story with fairly average gameplay. The repetitive nature can become tedious, especially during the later parts, but the narrative concept is interesting enough to push the player to guiding Rei to the end of Purgatory. This is one of those games where the recommendation would have more to do with the level of personal interest in the story than anything else as that’s the most noteworthy feature in an otherwise good but unremarkable action RPG.
Chris Shive · Aug 27, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Even though it might just look like another game featuring teenage anime girls, that didn’t make the narrative any less compelling. What made Crystar‘s story so impressive was how it always kept me on my toes. Always introducing new plot points when I kept thinking I had everything figured out. While there was a lot to keep in mind, everything that happened in the story made sense. The narrative of Crystar is worth experiencing because of how real and relatable it is. It’s just a shame that the rest of the game couldn’t have been on the same level.
Cameron Hawkins · Aug 20, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - I was ready to be done with Crystar after its first 15 hours and leave somewhat satisfied, but the last chunk of the game really soured the rest of the experience. I was willing to give a pass to the stiff combat and the average writing precisely because it was building up to be a tighter, more entertaining experience. However, by artificially extending the length of a game that didn’t even make good use of its extra time, Crystar’s faults end up being impossible to tolerate and very easy to loathe. I really wanted to like Crystar, but I guess I couldn’t find much light in its darkness.
Lucas Rivarola · Aug 20, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - The use of the crying mechanics and turning her tears and sad thoughts into strength is a really unique and interesting idea. That paired with the beautiful art style, character designs and interesting story, we almost have a perfect game. Unfortunately, with the less than stellar combat mechanics, the lack of enemy variety and the lack of differentiating dungeons, it may not entice players who also want fluid gameplay. However for fans who do like narrative-driven and linear games along with dark themes and gorgeous designs, then this is definitely a title that should be added to your library.
Thi Chao · Aug 12, 2019 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Crystar runs really well on the Switch, but is held back by poor combat and level design.
