  • Crysis Warhead is undeniably fun, great looking, and includes a strong multiplayer component—all for $30. It’s also short, and has some awkward pacing. You’re really getting your money’s worth from the multiplayer, and if you can run it on the enthusiast settings you’ll have a great time just watching your machine get a workou

  • One of the best parts about Crysis Warhead is the price. With an expansion-minded retail rate of $29.99, Crysis Warhead is inexpensive enough to make many of its issues feel very minor. Taken with the optimizations that may make it a friendlier game on more hardware configurations and its action-focused pacing, it's also much more approachable than the previous game.

  • On the multiplayer front, Warhead introduces a team deathmatch mode, revamped balancing, and a handful of better maps, but does little to match the depth of other online shooters like Call of Duty 4's persistent rankings, perks, and unlockable arsenals. Thankfully the action-packed single-player campaign hits the sweet spot that the multiplayer misses, which makes Crysis Warhead an exceptional value.

  • It all comes down to style over substance. On one hand, the visuals are absolutely breathtaking, but on the other, the progression and gameplay doesn’t do anything meaningful. Crysis 3 feels more like a graphical showpiece to usher in a new generation of visuals rather than setting up believable and exciting combat scenarios. Sneaking around and essentially being Predator feels great, but there’s no evolution through the campaign and it just feels like more of the same from start to finish.

  • Warhead follows Crysis' Psycho, the brutish cockney who was more or less a side character to Nomad (the lead in the first game), in a storyline that runs alongside that of the original. As in last year's game, expect to encounter dense jungle environments, barren ice fields, Korean soldiers and plenty of flying aliens. There's no denying that this is more of the same, except here it's a more tightly woven experience with a little less freedom to explore. The levels this time around are more linear but you won't get a moment of peace long enough to notice.

  • Warhead's single-player campaign should take you no more than six hours or so to complete, but not only does it invite multiple play-throughs, it costs only $30--and doesn't require you to own the original. In other words, there is no reason why anyone with a capable PC shouldn't play Crysis Warhead. It's more focused, it's more intense, and though it doesn't provide as much of the sandbox feel as Crysis veterans would wish for, it still delivers on every other front. Play this game.

  • The story is handled poorly. Missions often end abruptly, culminating in awkwardly staged cut-scenes that make characters look as if they’d forgotten their lines. Instead of, say, the thrilling ghillie-suit flashback sequence in COD4, Warhead shoves a wedge of backstory in through a handful of non-interactive audio-only sequences. It’s an inelegant gimmick suited to a lesser developer.

Crysis Warhead is an incredible value, and you'd be hard pressed to find a better shooter on the PC this year. The single- player campaign is tight and superb, and the multiplayer portion delivers something that you can have fun with. I love the intelligent gameplay of Warhead; this isn't a game where you simply react to highly scripted events, but one where you have to think on your feet, and you're rewarded for doing so.

  • Worth the money? There’s just enough to twist your arm into purchasing the game. It’s more of the same and if you’re a fan of the original, Warhead is a dead cert. We await Crysis 2. It’s going to be stonking great.

  • To end on a tenuous analogy, Crysis Warhead is probably the Back to the Future II of videogames: rather than totally transform the story and setting, it returns to the original narrative, exploring it from a different angle; once again, the results are sharper, meaner, and have a lot more for you to think about (although, thankfully, there are no dodgy CGI sharks or Elisabeth Shue performances).

About the game

Take on the fight as the volatile Sergeant "Psycho" Sykes in a new parallel story taking place during the events of Crysis. Psycho's secret mission will take him to the other side of the island on a ruthless pursuit of a North Korean general hell-bent on obtaining powerful technology. With the versatile powers of his Nanosuit and an arsenal of fully customizable weapons & vehicles at his disposal, Sykes will do whatever it takes to carry out his top-secret objective. Action on the other side of the island is more intense, the battles are fierce, and the mission protocol is no longer "Adapt to Survive". As Sergeant Sykes, now you must adapt to dominate the battle.
