  • That’s Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars' story in a nutshell. For all the hype about the geektastic cast for the campaign movies (Michael Ironside, Tricia Helfer, Billy Dee Williams, etc.) the epic tale still boils down to mission after mission where you run around doing what you are told. It's never clear if the hammy acting is because the esteemed players are taking the material too seriously or not seriously enough. No matter; if you love cheesy full motion videos, this story is for you.

  • Command & Conquer 3 brings back one of gaming's most beloved franchises and lets a brand new audience experience it. It delivers on every front, with great action, deceptive strategic depth, stunning visuals and incredible multiplayer support. If you loved EA's effort with Battle for Middle-earth II or if this RTS genre sounds like something you'd like to take a look at, Command & Conquer 3 should be in your collection. Just don't expect the Xbox 360 version to compete with the PC release.

If you can, you'll want to play Command & Conquer 3 on the PC. If you can't, the Xbox 360 version is good enough that it is definitely worth playing. The fast paced nature of the game can make things a little bit frustrating in the story mode, especially when you can't quickly reload a mission once things go sour. Even so, the presentation and good mission design work with the decent controls to make for an enjoyable game. The online play has a great feature set and with a level playing field is great fun. When you put it all together, you've got one impressive little game.

  • There's a good set of achievements to unlock, including a few zero-point ones that pop up should you lose a few too many multiplayer games in a row or bypass the tutorial mission. But it's all just icing on the proverbial cake, since playing Tiberium Wars is a reward unto itself. Not only is it a great game, but it's a great example of a console RTS done right. If you've never played a Command & Conquer game before, there's no better time than the present.

  • Offering slick, fast-paced gameplay, white-knuckle multiplayer, a lengthy single-player experience, and more B-movie cheese than a plate of microwave nachos, there’s a lot to like about Command & Conquer 3. We’re not so sure the full motion video is a great idea and the multiplayer match-making will hopefully be patched soon, but overall, Tiberium Wars is an excellent choice for both vets and rookies of the genre.

Those of you looking for a leap forward in gameplay mechanics won't find it here, but fans of C&C and fast action RTS games will likely find this return to roots very appealing for its pace and traditional play. While we were hoping for a little more creativity, we couldn't help but have fun through the game's long GDI and Nod campaigns and shorter Scrin campaign. The skirmish was also a good ride even with some of the balancing issues in play. If you're looking for a game that makes it fun as hell to blow things up and leave quickly, C&C 3 is definitely for you.

  • It's simple and dumb because it wants to be, and has clearly worked very hard to be pretty watertight about it. While there's a certain obnoxiousness in its total refusal to innovate, in a lot of ways it's exactly the right real-time strategy game at exactly the right time. After years in the wilderness, RTS is pretty cool again right now, and something as cheerfully straightforward as this is just what's needed to stop the big braininess of Company of Heroes and Supreme Commander leading to another plunge into an inaccessibility that turns more casual players off the whole genre.

About the game

It is 2047 and the stakes could not be higher. Tiberium -- a self-replicating alien substance that has infected the Earth -- is spreading like a radioactive ice age. The GDI, a high-tech alliance of the world's most advanced nations, is fighting to contain Tiberium, but Kane, the megalomaniacal leader of The Brotherhood of NOD has other plans for Earth. Kane's secret society turned superpower is bent on using Tiberium to take control and transform humanity into his twisted vision of the future. All-out war rages over Tiberium and the fate of the planet rests in the balance.
