  A streamlined, cartoony version of a great game, Civilization Revolution 2 keeps the fun of the series intact whilst shedding some of its depth. Some frustrating design decisions and the odd technical wobble stop it short of tablet greatness, but there’s still enough here to let hardcore players get their 4X fix.

  Civilization Revolution 2 is a mixed bag of shoddy battle mechanics and missing features. It might be fun for casual fans of strategy, but the vast amount of better games on Android, like Ravenmark or Great little War Game dim its appeal a bit.

  It's tough to recommend Civilization: Revolution 2 in its current state. It makes few meaningful improvements to the original game, and in some ways its even takes a step back. Depending on your taste for 2D art, I would actually recommend the original Civilization: Revolution over this version. This sequel that feels like a missed opportunity to improve on a good idea.

  In some respects, it does make great strides to deliver a superior mobile experience, but it lacks the true innovation to justify its existence as a genuine sequel. Compound that with the title’s extremely steep $14.99 pricetag, and it becomes extremely difficult to recommend over the far more affordable first iteration.

  As a Civilization fan with thousands of hours played in the series, it’s difficult for me to get into the simplified design of Civilization Revolution 2. That doesn’t make it a bad game – it offers good controls and variety in leaders, maps, and scenarios, and can easily keep the momentum going for several hours of grand strategy.

  In the end there’s no denying that there’s fun to be had in Civilization Revolution 2. If you’ve played the original, you can safely avoid this one. I guess if you can offset the $14.99 asking price with the lack of IAPs, that can justify the higher price point. Those new to the series or willing to overlook the streamlined feature set will find this to be a solid mobile strategy experience.

  If your only experience with the series is Civilization Revolution then - even with the tablet trade-offs - this is worth playing, but ultimately there are better, more complex strategy games on iPad already - even the previous Civ game.

  If, like the developers seem to have done, you ignore the more complex facets of the game, there’s still a lot of Civilization-like fun to have. It’s just a lesser experience than even the first Revolution was.
