- As much as I wanted to like CivCity: Rome, I couldn’t bring myself to accepting it as a worthy simulation game. I suggest buying only if you are a hardcore gamer searching for your next city builder to play. This is Rome after all, one of the greatest empires in history. If they intend on making another CivCity title, maybe they could look into revolving it around the empire Alexander built.

Still, if you are new to the city-building genre and want a friendly introduction in a familiar setting then CivCity: Rome is a passable enough way to while away the rainy summer evenings. But remember, there is much more to discover outside these lacklustre city walls.
Paul Devlin · Aug 11, 2006 Reviewed on PCRead full review - There's clearly plenty to complain about with this game, but at the end of the day we play games for fun. While it's not nearly as deep as you'd expect for a game with the Firaxis seal of approval on it in terms of features or gameplay, CivCity Rome manages to provide a significant level of entertainment, despite its obvious and glaring faults.
Steve Klett · Aug 08, 2006 Reviewed on PCRead full review - CivCity: Rome could have been so much more. Civ-styled tech trees, units, diplomacy, and great people could have provided a shot in the arm to the city-building genre, which hasn't evolved in any significant way since Impressions set the standard almost a decade ago. Classical history buffs should find it interesting for a short time because of the historical flavor, but déjà vu quickly overwhelms any sense of enjoyment from trying to match Augustus and turn Rome from brick into marble.
Brett Todd · Jul 28, 2006 Reviewed on PCRead full review - CivCity: Rome is certainly an enjoyable and challenging city building game but it hardly lives up to the promise and potential that comes with the title. As far as the association with Civilization goes, it seems that Firefly's game is more in touch with the marketing potential of the brand than with the mechanics of play. The few concepts that have been incorporated into the new format definitely work well but I definitely wish more had been done.
Steve Butts · Jul 25, 2006 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Meantimes, we'd like to apologise to Sid Meier - this game, while not terrible, has sullied your good name and brand. Our only suggestion is to never let someone else make a game for you and to make sure the inevitable next game in the franchise explores a less familiar environ and period.
