  • The single-player mode has clearly been manipulated to nudge gamers toward the MMO-styled subscription plan, which doesn't offer great bang for the buck at present. Serious improvements will have to be made to the online features to make Planet mode viable for the long term. So right now you're stuck with an unremarkable and rather conventional city-building game that's big on promises but has yet to make good on most of them.

We encourage you to give the demo a shot before committing to it. The future is bright for Cities XL, but it's doubtful that it's bright enough to dethrone SimCity 4 as the preferred city-building simulation.

  • It’s a fun, addictive little game that’s a good homage to a classic genre. On the other hand, as of publication there are still quite a few bugs and entire features that just haven’t been implemented yet. Coupled with the lack of a truly competitive element this game will probably only entertain hardcore fans of the genre. At the moment, it’s just hard to justify the subscription price, and just buying the game won’t work either, as non-subscribers get limited post-release support, and no new content.

  • All in all, this game is really in-depth, and has a lot of potential with the updates and expansion packs coming its way. I thoroughly enjoyed this game, and will play more of it in the future. We asked some of the players in the chat rooms about the game and we only got positive feedback from them, including the player's views that the monthly fee was reasonable and worth it.

  • I've enjoyed myself here, but Cities XL does not live up to its ambitions. The solo city-builder is a well-paced project for those who like to plot boulevards, but the appeal of the larger game remains unresolved. This is one game we'll be returning to in due course where - all being well - a re-review should cast things in a slightly different light.

About the game

Cities XL is a next-generation city building game that allows players to develop cities on realistic 3D maps using an incredible collection of unique structures and monuments based on American, Asian and European-influenced architectural styles. The maps feature a variety of environments: mountains, hills, canyons, beaches and islands, all set in different climates from tropical to desert, Mediterranean to temperate. Players must create the right combinations of social services, leisure activities, special events and other job opportunities within their cities in order to feed, clothe, employ and entertain their citizens.
