  • Chroma Squad certainly does a solid job of providing an experience that invokes pleasant memories of days past. After several hours of playtime I found myself watching old episodes of the original Power Rangers on Netflix. Only three days later and my kids are halfway through season one, eagerly waiting for the introduction of the Green Ranger. While the tactical-based combat provides a decent reason for younger fans to try out Chroma Squad, it’s abundantly clear which audience is going to appreciate this game the most.

  • Chroma Squad is a lot more fun and campy than I had anticipated. The developers really nailed their theme on the head and you simply can’t complain about much except for some slight execution in terms of level design. I did encounter a few slight audio bugs, but these were very negligible. If you’re looking for some serious tactics fun and have been craving some of that late 80s or early 90s campiness, do yourself a favor and pick up Chroma Squad on just about any platform of your choice.

  • I am no particular fan of sentai, but Chroma Squad pays such a loving homage to the genre that it's hard for me not to like it. As a strategy game, it doesn't show off a bunch of new tricks, but the way it repackages aspects of the genre still makes it feel fresh and exciting.

  • Nothing too crazy as that would get away from the childlike adventure found within, but something to get away from the mind-numbing timing based mech battles that didn’t even work right. Also, there’s a lot of potential here for some real mythology to be created within this universe-in-need-of-saving. Until then, Chroma Squad is a nostalgic step in the right direction but it might take some time before we take bigger strides in giant mech feet.

  • A great deal of the enjoyment comes from my affection for the theme and the goofy yet earnest approach Behold took in presenting it, however, so make sure you account for that. At the very least, as a game, it's overall more well-designed than Knights of Pen & Paper. It applies much of what made that game good to a new genre, and it is unmistakably crafted from the same hands.

  • In fact, if you’re old enough to go all the way back to the beginning of the Power Rangers brand, you’ll probably enjoy Chroma Squad on a level that younger gamers might not appreciate. The nice part is that it’s of high enough quality that anyone can enjoy it, and the fact that Bandai Namco published it gives the game an extra special seal of approval. Get ready to be shouting “Lights, Camera, Chromatize!” at random moments and have other people looking at you strangely. Unless, of course, they’re playing too, in which case they might flash you a knowing smile.

  • Like much of Chroma Squad, it’s cute — your materials in the early game are cardboard and duct tape, all befitting a cheaply-made sentai show — but it’s shallow enough to feel rote pretty quickly. ...But frankly it’s hard to be too critical of Chroma Squad’s faults. The whole thing is just so darn sweet and well-intentioned that its failings are less like roadblocks and more a nagging sense that this lovely, joyful thing should have been just a bit more consistently delightful than it is.

  • Overall, Chroma Squad is an incredibly enjoyable experience—one that will appeal to anyone looking for a game that is just bursting with mindless fun. The goofy story is surprisingly well constructed and perfectly suited to the eccentric bosses and rewarding combat, while managing your studio, poorly designed UI, and some bugs can put a damper on the experience. But at the end of the day, any of these flaws are eclipsed by just how glorious Chroma Squad can be.

  • Despite a few questionable design choices and small bugs, Chroma Squad is an enjoyable experience. The customization makes all the difference in the world, and it has an infectious innocence that evokes fond childhood memories. The campaign goes on for a solid ten hours, plenty of time to use the framework’s potential to the fullest. If that doesn’t appeal there’s also a branching story, talk of adding multiplayer, and the end credits promise an upcoming New Game+ mode.

  • Although these individual flaws may seem to add up to something damning, the experience is greater than the sum of its parts. The story may be hit or miss and the mechanics overly simplistic, but the charm and nostalgia that come with the overall package makes Chroma Squad reach greater heights than a similar game with the same criticisms would. ...Chroma Squad is an overall enjoyable experience that runs on nostalgia, but falls short of becoming everything it could have been.
