- Despite all the pre-release excitement for a train/spider mashup, Choo-Choo Charles is a pretty mundane game. Thankfully, it is fairly short, you can have it wrapped up in under three hours. But more needed to be done with Charles to make him a truly scary enemy; his random appearances get tiresome and annoying, rather quickly. And indeed, he isn’t even the biggest scare. That belongs to the deadpan NPCs that, whilst voice acted pretty well, don’t show any emotion at all. Their dead eyes and lack of expression are what will stick with me long after the initial scare of Choo-Choo Charles himself.
Richard Dobson · Jan 10, 2024 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Choo-Choo Charles is the antithesis of a game that wears its silly nature on its sleeve, it hinges on the wacky premise of running from a spider-train to draw people in, but fails to deliver on anything to keep people thanks in large part due to its lackluster story, forgettable characters, shoddy design, and buggy experience. It has nuggets of potential that perhaps its sequel could improve upon, but for now, it’s just your run-of-the-mill indie horror that, without constant updates, will fall out of favor for better, more polished projects.
Gabriel Standford Reisinger · Dec 11, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - With its bad character models and some silly side missions, Choo-Choo Charles is simultaneously silly and scary. At one point you’ll be collecting pickles, and the next you’ll be in a heart pounding fight with a demon train engine with spider legs.
Jordan Hawes · Jan 13, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - In all, Choo-Choo Charles is an impressively made game for only having one person working on it - and what flaws it has don't get in the way of an overall solid experience. The game leans on its ridiculousness but also manages to keep an entertaining amount of tension due to the seemingly constant presence of the spider-train, heralded only by his horn.
Camrin Santchi · Dec 20, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Choo-Choo Charles is a fun, and original concept stretched so thinly that it caught our attention. We deserve to be underwhelmed by it, and its creator still deserves credit for a great little game.
Brau3er · Dec 16, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - As the credits rolled, I couldn’t help but feel like Choo-Choo Charles should be compared to a stocking stuffer. A fun, cheap little trinket that you enjoy for a minute and then never touch again. I promise I mean that in the nicest way possible.
Rhett Waselenchuk · Dec 11, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Choo-Choo Charles will offer temporary thrills to meme-lovers or horror-fans, but doesn't do anything particularly groundbreaking.
William Worrall · Dec 10, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Choo-Choo Charles is a silly mess of an adventure, with its joke of a premise falling short of ever delivering the punchline. Combat against the evil train is always tedious and repetitive, and running quests on foot is even more unappealing with awful stealth sections through dilapidated hallways.
Travis Northup · Dec 09, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - I had an okay time while exploring, messing with the train, and fighting Charles, but the frustrations with the enemy design (or lack thereof) made the game more of a pain than I was expecting. It’s a novel idea that’s more of a tech demo than a full-fledged experience.
Andrew Farrell · Dec 09, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Slightly above average or simply inoffensive. Fans of the genre should enjoy them a bit, but a fair few will be left unfulfilled.
