  • Children of Morta is an action RPG dungeon crawler that blends roguelike elements with hack-and-slash twin-stick gameplay, a captivating story, and awe-inspiring pixel graphics to create an unforgettable experience.

  • Despite all these issues, I still enjoy playing Children of Morta. It is very far from anything I would call a great experience, but there's enough going on in its combat design and storytelling that I feel compelled by it. Just know that if you do pick it up you'll have to wade through a lot of compromises, unless... you know.. you just buy it on some other platform.

  • The Children of Morta will give everything and fight anything to stop the Corruption from spreading across their world with the aid of individual masteries and touchy controls.

  • I can’t stress just how smartly made Children of Morta is. The narrative flows smoothly in and out of dungeons, the characters have a real life to them, and the gameplay is enthralling and has those addictive qualities that make you just want to keep leveling everyone up. In the 15-plus hours I invested in this adventure, I was thoroughly captivated by everything Dead Mage set out to achieve. The way family comes together for the final conflict is truly impressive.

  • Children Of Morta is a nice, story-driven action RPG that plays very well on the Nintendo Switch, especially in undocked mode. The hurdle is getting past the pixel art graphics. You'll either not like them, and skip over this game, or embrace them and be treated to a hefty action RPG and story-driven experience.

  • Dungeon runs feel hand-crafted for a portable console. Between the dungeon size, the bite-size story chunks, and the clear objectives, this is a game meant for picking up at a moment’s notice. Ultimately, players torn between this version and a home console one are choosing either function or form. Dedicated Switch gamers, on the other hand, would be fools to pass this one up.

  • If you’ve already saved the land of Rea on your PC, you should still pick up Children of Morta for the Switch to become even closer to the Bergson clan. For those who haven’t yet taken the plunge, Children of Morta most definitely belongs in your Switch library. If you need a reason to justify the console’s purchase or are simply ready to fall in love with your handheld all over again, this is the game that will do it for you. Defeat the Corruption without leaving the comforts of your cozy bed — after all, the Bergsons would agree that there’s no place like home.

  • While the hack and slash gameplay of each individual character is somewhat simple, the variance between each of the six is substantial, keeping things fairly fresh throughout the many runs. Additionally, skill trees and constant stat improvements grant a sense of empowerment and progression. It may not upheave the mechanical norms of roguelikes, but Children of Morta does a good job of weaving storytelling into the well-worn tropes of the genre to create something that feels unique.

  • Children of Morta has a very compelling story and the way they use death in the game to help progress the story is refreshing. However, there is so much that you need to unlock in the game to try and balance the difficulty in your favour to even complete the first dungeon. This, in turn, ruins the experience by having to play the same dungeon over and over. It is a shame that the same level of effort that was put into the story line was not put into the gameplay, things becomes repetitive quite quickly.

  • I really can’t stress enough how absolutely gorgeous this game is, the exquisitely detailed pixel art style and the brilliant narration combine to create a really atmospheric game. The random nature of the floor layouts and the different combat style of each character means that every time you venture into the depths of the dungeon, you’re sure to have a very different but incredibly enjoyable experience.

About the game

Children of Morta is a story-driven action RPG with a roguelite approach to character development, in which you don’t play a single character but a whole, extraordinary family of heroes. Hack’n’slash through hordes of enemies in procedurally generated dungeons, caves and lands and lead the Bergson family, with all their flaws and virtues, against the forthcoming Corruption. The story takes place in a distant land but copes with themes and emotions common to all of us: love and hope, longing and uncertainty, ultimately loss... and sacrifice we are willing to make to save the ones we care the most for. Ultimately, it's about a family of heroes standing together against the encroaching darkness.
