  • Celeste is 2D puzzle-platforming at its most hardcore but its also sweet and charming at the same time. Sure, it’ll kick your ass repeatedly without much remorse but the impeccably smooth three-button controls and ingenious level design is what differentiates Celeste from the rest of the pack. It tells a surprisingly deep and emotional story featuring a relatable main character and it all blends uniquely together to make one of the finest gaming experience of the year.

  • Celeste does just that. Celeste made me feel. Not just through gameplay or storytelling, but through every aspect and feature of the games humble design. Though our paths are different, I felt an innate connection to Madeline and from that instant I was engrossed in this small adventure until my thumbs felt like falling off.

  • I have played many difficult platformers in my life, many of which felt overly difficult and in the end I lost interest. There was something about Celeste that kept bringing me back for more. Whether it was the feeling of “look what I can do” or “I know I can do this” or the reward of feeling accomplished when making a difficult jump. Through it all, I never lost interest. I just kept trying until I was able to complete a stage

  • Splendid level design and responsive controls. Excellent variety from one screen to the next, paced with challenging collectibles and a narrative worth relating to. Pixel art style reflects amazingly well in the environments and music is a great combination of deep synth and instrumental pieces. Platforming feels perfect in its tempo and level of challenge. B-Side Cassettes provide even more challenges.

  • Developer Matt Makes Games’ previous release was TowerFall, the archery-themed four-player battle royale. With its single-player focus and touching narrative, Celeste might seem like an odd follow-up. However, like TowerFall, Celeste features polished and intense action that makes it easy to love and hard to put down.

  • I wasn’t expecting much when I went into Celeste and I came out pleasantly surprised by the touching story and top tier platforming level design. One of the best games of the year so far!

  • Celeste offers a bold and beautiful story that will touch anyone who can relate to its plot foundation. It’s a brilliantly designed and gorgeously presented experience throughout the entirety of play. Perhaps Celeste’s greatest achievement, however, is that it appeals to speedrunners, thrill seekers, and completionists alike. Furthermore, it doesn’t alienate genre newcomers thanks to how accessible it is.

  • Simply put, Celeste is a tour de force. A piece of work that will no doubt go down as one of the year’s best platformers or even just one of its best games in general. Between the immaculately crafted levels with a wide variety of challenges, the intense gameplay that rewards crackerjack timing, the sheer amount of post-game content and things to discover in every chapter, and a moving, amazing story in the form of Madeline’s urge to climb the behemoth that awaits her, what we have here is truly magnificent and an experience that simply cannot be missed. And hey, word has it that the view from the top is amazing.

  • It's the consistent variety and inventiveness, the simple but honest and emotional story, the notable amount of content, and the difficulty that gets so nuts it must be seen to be believed that all make this a game a must-play. Celeste is a game I heartily recommend to any fan of platformers, gamers looking for a real challenge, and anybody who wants a good story -- so basically everybody. I absolutely loved my time with it, and I'm sure many others will as well. This is a mountain I'd gladly climb back down just to scale the whole thing again.

  • Celeste is special, because not only does it serve up a delight in precise platforming and environmental puzzle-solving, it also tells an emotional story of a girl trying to overcome her depression. While there are times where it feels like the mountain drains you of your will, it’s important to never stop pushing.
