  • It’s a testament to what an incredible achievement Cave Story+ was, or is, that it still holds up so well, remaining to be an engaging and well-paced adventure from start to finish. I had never expected to fall head over heels for the game as much as I did, wrongly believing that perhaps it wasn’t really for me. But, now that the Mimigas have been saved, all is right the world once more.

  • All in all, Cave Story+ is an excellent port and it feels right at home on the Nintendo Switch. I know people go on and on about how cool it is to bring the console experience on the go, but it also works really well with smaller titles too. Playing Cave Story on Switch is my preferred way to relive this classic indie gem and I’m ready to start another play through as soon as I can.

  • Cave Story + is a retro platformer with everything going for it – fun story, great visuals and audio, upgradeable weapons, killer bunnies. Seriously, check this one out.

  • Cave Story+ isn’t the definitive version of Cave Story—I think that crown still belongs to the WiiWare version, but then again, that version isn’t portable. I do miss the ability to switch graphical styles, but it’s really the only regrettable absentee.

  • Like I said before, I envy the newcomers, not only for not knowing what they’re in for, but not knowing what they’re missing. Veterans of Cave Story can complain all day long about what was better before, and that isn’t going to change how the brand new Switch owner, who was a toddler when Cave Story was released, will enjoy and experience this brand new, beautifully polished and properly balanced Cave Story+.

  • The biggest addition is to the price tag, but Cave Story itself is still a masterclass in minimalist video game design.

  • For a game that was made by one person way back in 2004, Cave Story+ still remains highly enjoyable to play today thanks to fluent controls and a deft build up in challenge. The original heartfelt story and characters are a bonus that gives the atmosphere a personal feel to the setting that still endures today, which the likes of Undertale took inspiration from. A few added modes that are not terribly substantial, like the option to play as Curly Brace or the time trail modes, are welcomed, but do not add much to this indie classic. The tweaks done to this game do make it the preferred way to play it, and since the Switch version can be played on the go or on the big screen, this does come highly recommended to newcomers and even to veterans.

  • More than ten years after its first release, Cave Story+ still holds its ground as the apex of its genre. There is hardly anything left to be improved upon regarding its gameplay, visuals, or soundtrack – and this plus version is truly the definitive release of the game. You’d be doing yourself a disservice by not adding it to your library!

  • It's almost incredible how well Cave Story has managed to stand the test of time. It isn't a particularly old title, but its limited resources and one-man development team seem like a recipe for a dated entry. Instead, it manages to justify its existence in any given generation with each re-release.

  • The linear nature of the game also leaves little room for exploration. Yes there are missle and energy expansions, but unless you’re determined to get 100% completion there really isn’t an in-game motive for exploration in the way Metroidvania fans are accustomed. Overall the game is amazing but it’s starting to show its age.

About the game

You wake up in a dark cave with no memory of who you are, where you came from or why you're in such a place. Uncovering Mimiga Village you discover that the once-carefree Mimigas are in danger at the hands of a maniacal scientist. The Mimigas’ only hope rest squarely on the shoulders of a quiet, amnesiac boy who can't remember his own name. Run, jump, shoot, fly and explore your way through a massive action-adventure reminiscent of classic 8- and 16-bit games. Take control and learn the origins of this world’s power, stop the delusional villain and save the Mimiga!
