  • Those who need an exercise in patience should avoid this game for the same reason that a body builder would avoid trying to carry a Monster Truck. Calvino Noir butchers a great concept more than any other title I’ve played this year. It’s a game that does so much, so poorly it boggles the mind: level design, graphics, animations, story, voice acting, and even the price tag.

  • From the faulty mechanics to unfair challenges, it fails to present itself as anything more than visually beautiful. It would have been great without the jagged movements or difficulty surpassing your enemies, as side-scrolling point and click gameplay doesn’t fit a game of espionage. It’s disappointing because the scenery and the visuals are beautiful, down the cheesy detective lines, deep music playing in the background and all the rain. It was so close, but no cigar.

  • I love a challenging game, but Calvino Noir is simply too difficult to keep my interests for long. Calvino Noir demands 100% concentration, and if the gameplay experience was 100% consistent, it might warrant it.

  • This noir-inspired stealth game looks fantastic, but its gameplay is more frustratingly boilerplate than it is hardboiled.

  • The system you rage against in Calvino Noir is not the muddy, corporate pressures of Wilt and crew’s dry story, it’s your own means of existence in the game itself. It’s really not about espionage, but a losing fight against your influence in the world. You have the ability to choke guards, to pick locks, to interact with certain objects based on what character you’re currently playing, however those abilities are not guaranteed, highlighted with laborious repetition. In that way, there’s a cynicism deep-rooted in Calvino Noir, a heavy darkness you can’t escape.

  • Calvino Noir could have been something so much more; there is just as much mystery and subterfuge in its story as there is in its gameplay and mechanics. I can’t help but feel this game should have remained on the iPhone; the move to current-gen just doesn’t work for me and I was left unimpressed with no need to return.

  • It makes for a frustrating, unbalanced experience. You want to push on and find out where the intriguing story will take you, but you'll constantly find yourself stumbling to your death. And then you'll stop playing. And it's a real shame, because Calvino Noir gets so many things right. It builds a world, populates it with characters you want to find out more about, and then does its utmost to make sure you don't get to experience any of that.

  • Had it not been for the greatly compromised stealth mechanics, it’s not a stretch to say that Calvino Noir would have scored much higher than the number you can see plastered on the page here. As it is, you could gut your way through the game and still find some degree of satisfaction, but ultimately, like a lovelorn romantic trying to find answers at the bottom of a cheap bottle of whiskey, you can expect frustration and a longing for what Calvino Noir could have been.
