  • BoxBoy! may not make the best first impression, but through the course of my adventure, I began embuing the cute, blocky protagonist with his own personality. ...But going deeper than its simple exterior reveals a game filled with ingenious puzzles and a clever, box-manipulating mechanic. It does what a good puzzle game is supposed to: serve up a challenge and make you feel smarter for figuring out the solution, which was right in front of you all along.

It might not look like much, but BoxBoy is one of the cleverest puzzle platformers I’ve ever played. The constant variety gave me dozens of uses for Qbby’s simple-to-learn self-replicating abilities. Coupled with great pacing and level designs that encourage and reward experimentation, I just couldn’t put it down until I’d cleared the 18-world campaign and put some time into the delightful side challenges.

  • Everything before the credits represents a totally satisfying puzzle experience, but if you want more, a whole new collection of levels open after completion. ...I admire that these difficult puzzles exist, but I’m happy they are positioned as bonus content. Boxboy is an easy-to-overlook entry in the 3DS digital library. It’s inexpensive and doesn’t have a particularly remarkable look about it, but its well-designed puzzles continue to surprise, making it absolutely worth playing.

  • Those looking for a tough challenge, might not ever get it. ...There is also an in-game shop where you spend your acquired points on various knick-knacks like costumes for BoxBoy, music from the levels, helpful hints or even bonus levels that task you with picking up collectibles in a certain amount of time. These things certainly add to the game's length, but won't be where you spend the majority of your time.

  • If you crave a digestible and portable puzzle-based diversion, look no further than HAL's Box Boy. Its outright friendliness helps combat the patience-testing nature of most puzzle games, and those minutes-long levels allow players to make some degree of progress, even if they don't have much time to spare. Box Boy might not change the world, but even so, it's refreshing to see a big developer like HAL take a gamble on such a quirky little experiment.

  • While not a thoroughly outstanding game, BOXBOY! is an eminently pleasant, breezy little puzzle-platformer that offers some moderate challenge and focuses more on just having a nice time. A fuss-free, no-pressure adventure that takes a plain gimmick and showcases just how versatile it can be. And it’s just too damn darling for its own good.

  • There’s content and charm in spades, as well as solid mechanics and undeniably fun gameplay. Puzzle game veterans will find themselves easily breezing through the majority of the game, and even the last few worlds will only need a bit of thought and patience to get through. Those looking for a more laid-back and bite-size experience however should look no further than Boxboy.

  • BOXBOY! is a remarkably fun little Nintendo eShop title that you are likely to spend a good few hours on if you enjoy the puzzle genre. It may not be to everyone’s taste, but the gameplay mechanics are solid, the minimalist visuals easily charm and the musical accompaniment is particularly catchy.

  • The only real downside to Boxboy is that there are so many ideas that I wish some of them were expanded upon more. Each new mechanic really only gets about a half-dozen levels to shine, and each one is so rich that they might even be able to support their own game. Because of that onslaught of fresh ideas, Boxboy never gets boring, which makes it a fun experience for your 3DS.
