  • Blasphemous walks that tightest of ropes between goddamnit-I-hate-this-game frustration and oh-my-god-I’m-so-proud-of-myself bliss we all love. When you’re running low on health you’ll have to decide whether to push on or return to a shrine to freshen up, because all the enemies you just beat will be back when you turn around. That means you may well end up worse off if you make a mistake.

  • If you're into challenging action platformer games, Blasphemous is as good as the next. It isn't perfect or revolutionary, but it doesn't have to be. Its lore and visual direction are disturbingly beautiful and craft an interesting and distinct world. Great boss fights and an enjoyable and challenging combat system ensures that fans of the genre will have enough to sink their teeth into and enjoy.

  • Blasphemous really is an unholy amount of fun to get into. With so much freedom to explore and great art it is an enthralling game that quickly becomes addictive. Between the blood splattering everywhere and the general sense of dread, the story manages to build up and anybody who likes Metroidvania type games with a solid narrative should give this game a chance.

  • Blasphemous finds success by adhering to staples of the genre and executing them well. Coupled with its strong art style and design, it’s a great option for anyone seeking another Metroidvania fix. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it proudly shows off its visual personality.

Blasphemous is an absolutely stunning game everyone should see in motion. I loved it for the first 10 or so hours, but then it just continues to stay the course throughout. With a little more variety this could have been a true classic. Still this developer has some talent and I would love a follow-up with a little more flavor and a lot less bulk. On a purely visual scale this game has few equals and for that I can recommend it easily, just be aware that not much changes as far as game play goes throughout the entire journey.

  • Blasphemous is a beautifully haunting game. The mechanics are solid but they bring very little new to the table. At the same time, the world is interesting and the theme is pretty intriguing. If you’re into Metroidvania and the prospect of exploring a world of profanity, blasphemy, and violence fascinates you, Blasphemous will be up your alley.

  • Blasphemous has an astonishingly good looking art style, making the oft used pixel art look feel fresh, even after all these years. But beyond that, there’s a solid game here, with a decent challenge that will keep you hooked. That the story is also captivating – steeping you in the lore of the universe here – is just another upside to this brilliant adventure.

  • It’s a religious metaphor, making the dark elements of sin, guilt and redemption almost tangible in their mechanical design. Guilt stems from death as death results in failure. The whole game is a representation of the religious doubt and prosecution placed upon so many generations of people and while it’s certainly a game that’s not shy about where itss themes come from, there’s a layer of depth that could be trawled through for ages to discover what everything really means.

  • It may not be the best Metroidvania on the market, nor does it quite rival the essence of the original Dark Souls. However, such triumphs are so incredibly highly regarded to the point that it almost seems unfair to compare such a small ambitious project to them. What Blasphemous does achieve though, it does so well enough to warrant itself as a strong contender on the market. It’s probably one of the best looking indie games of the year, accompanied by incredibly effective notes of religious horror. More importantly, minus a few small gripes, it’s still a very enjoyable game to play through.

  • Still, Blasphemous tempted me back thanks to its multiple endings, the requirements for which are suitably vague. After one completion I had enough understanding of its world to have a clue as to where I should look and, like with any good Metroidvania, I feel intrigued enough to return for at least one more playthrough.
