  • Epiphany is a solid evolution over its predecessors. That's equally the case in its presentation, with the character sprites and painted backdrops feeling more expressive and readable than past games. And while the voice recording set-up still sounds endearingly unprofessional, the actors do a great job conveying the tragic weariness at the heart of the plot.

  • As a newcomer to the series, I was afraid that much of Epiphany’s tension would be lost on me as I had not experienced the buildup of the previous four games. But with such likeable protagonists, puzzles that elucidated the story further rather than slow it down, and plot twist after plot twist, by the finale I felt like I was part of Rosa and Joey’s story. I felt like I was right there with them at the end when…well, you’ll just have to see for yourself.

  • I was drawn to all the characters I met, which is a better testament to Gilbert’s writing than the previous passage. There’s something to be said about playing through a supernatural plot feeling like everyone you meet is someone you know or heard of. It is the finest of New York City stories in that way.

  • The Blackwell series has spanned eight years and as such has developed a devoted following. Blackwell Epiphany had a lot to live up to and could have easily faltered. Thankfully, the game stands strong as one of the best of the series. Rosa and Joey’s tangle with new mysteries and dangers are enormously exciting. It’s sad to see the series go but the satisfying revelations and conclusion makes Blackwell Epiphany a must play.

  • Epiphany has an intriguing and well-written story packed with numerous interesting subplots, wonderful and believable characters that are well acted, cool pixel graphics that I kind of wish Broken Age had gone with, and entertaining puzzles whose solutions make sense. After the utter trainwreck of Moebius this was exactly what I needed, a proper well-told adventure from a developer who actually knew what they were doing.

About the game

A dead man’s soul cries out against the force of a ferocious blizzard. He cries for help. He cries for answers. Then he screams as he is torn apart like damp tissue paper. This wasn’t the first time, and it won’t be the last. The police are powerless to stop it, so the duty falls to the only ones who can. What force could be so powerful – and so malevolent – that it would destroy the very core of a life in order to get what it wants? Rosa Blackwell and Joey Mallone mean to find out, even if it means risking themselves in the process.
