- BLACKTAIL is a game that feels like an interactive folk story; with the use of Slavic myths as well as its own original ideas, the storytelling and immersion are truly excellent. Despite all the praise, combat is a huge drawback and does bring the story down quite a bit, but BLACKTAIL is truly like no other and gives an excellent twist to a classic folk story.
DShelley · Mar 22, 2023 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Blacktail is one of the most unexpected, original and atmospheric games not only of December, but of the entire outgoing year. Of course, the authors still lack experience and skill, but they approached the concept of an adventure about the young Baba Yaga with soul and scope.
Brau3er · Dec 28, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Blacktail tells a sad story about a girl derided and shunned by her community and how, through self-actualization, finds herself a force to be reckoned with. Though the game falters in explaining grander, more philosophical ideas such as the differences between good and evil – going so far to say those binaries matter not if one is true to oneself – it succeeds in realizing the power of Baba Yaga as more than a Witch.
Jonathan Moore · Dec 23, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - The ending was a little bit predictable, but the adventure of young Yaga added something new for fans and those new to the Baba Yaga lore. Dark, entertaining, original, and bewitching - Blacktail is a solid choice that plays on the same level as some of the best RPG games.
Alex Huebner · Dec 18, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Blacktail is a welcome surprise for the end of the year. Combat can come off as cruel due to the limited number of arrows and the limited dodge mechanic, but the actual firing of arrows is excellent. Boss fights feel very satisfying once you finally get a read on what they're doing, but the variable difficulty that can be utilized during boss battles can provide some relief if players are more interested in the story than gameplay.
Cody Medellin · Dec 16, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Blacktail’s art and captivating storytelling take the narrative genre in a new direction. Backed by a combination of solid gameplay and in-depth moral system, the game excels in almost every aspect.
Noah Rigsby · Dec 16, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - In a landscape littered with copycat games, Blacktail’s originality make it a winner. Set aside the game’s mechanically frustrating and probably unnecessary boss battles. Blacktail’s world, characters and narrative are easily worth the very reasonable price of admission.
Mark Steighner · Dec 15, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - The world alone is interesting and new enough to enjoy its adventure despite its faults. The purposefully unwelcoming atmosphere makes each step feel like a defiant triumph. The combat could be more consistently polished, but nevertheless, the world is intriguing.
Rosh Kelly · Dec 15, 2022 Reviewed on PCRead full review - My time with Blacktail was frustrating. Not because it was a pain to play or that the writing was awful, but because there’s a strong game buried underneath some strange design decisions and disappointing performance issues.
Joshua Robertson · Dec 15, 2022 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - BLACKTAIL is a well-made, highly polished title that is easy to recommend. Make sure you have the time to properly level up and explore. This beautiful, haunting world is one I hope to come back to time and time again.
