  • I had a fun time with Blacksad: Under the Skin. The immersive soundtrack and engaging story never out stayed its welcome and for me I’d say it rivals Telltales The Wolf Among Us as one of the better detective story games out there.

Problems aside though Blacksad: Under the Skin is an interesting tale of murder and corruption that presents in one of the best takes on the adventure game formula-multiple endings, choices that really matter, and a cast of characters that are extremely engaging. I never felt like the story was coming out of left field with its ideas, and was shocked when I started figuring out what was happening. I love this game and if the Life Is Strange or one of the many Telltale series has ever been enjoyable, I think there’s a lot of enjoy in Blacksad.

  • If you’re a fan of point-and-click adventure games and have a penchant for gritty murder mysteries, there’s a lot to like in Blacksad: Under the Skin. Excellent characterisation and acting brings this quirky yet dark world to life with gusto, and the game’s narrative moves at a steady enough pace that you’re always kept interested. It’s a shame the graphics don’t look as sharp as they should on Xbox One X, but it’s a small issue in an otherwise unique game.

  • Although a lot of work has been done to make sure that Blacksad fits well with his role, many other characters have something uncanny, making them feel strangely off. Blacksad: Under the Skin harbors a story that has its great moments, superb voice-acting and does have a lot to offer point-and-click fans. Sadly, with its plethora of technical issues, it’s simply tough to recommend.

  • Blacksad has some potential with its story and the use of animal characters. The background jazz does its part as well. Sadly, the poor and laggy combination of animations and gameplay that just doesn’t feel balanced enough in speed and action destroy a lot. This game just needs an entire patch or something to get it up on its feet, or a bit more developing time/reflection, though it’s a bit too late for that.

  • Although marred by some technical issues at launch, as well as some poorly-implemented action sequences, the charm of this world and pull of its story are enough to make Blacksad: Under The Skin an engaging adaptation of the popular graphic novel series.

  • Blacksad: Under The Skin is an enjoyable detective game and the gritty noir story is very gripping. You care what happens to your cat-man detective and you’ll want to get to the bottom of the crime. All the other characters in the game are interesting and varied and the fact they are animals makes things a bit more entertaining. But the controls when moving Blacksad are so slow and clunky that they let the game down a tad, ruining the will to explore the world fully.

  • Even though it is standard detective noir material, the story remains engaging enough that newcomers to the series might be encouraged to seek out the original graphic novels afterward. The core gameplay mechanics work well, since they feel like an upgraded version of the formula established by Telltale Games. Issues like slow movement, pregnant pauses, and finicky hotspot detection deflate any enthusiasm the game may foster. If you can live with this sort of thing, then Blacksad is a good adventure game, but others who mind these issues might want to wait for future patches to address these concerns.

  • It’s such a shame. There’s a potentially amazing game to be had in Blacksad: Under the Skin. The idea is great and the vocal performances are strong all around. But having to reload your game a grand total of fifteen times before being taking out by a game-breaking bug is unacceptable. Hopefully Pendulo Studios learns from their mistakes and gives us the Blacksad game we can actually play and enjoy. If you’re still curious to try it, go with the PC version as I hear it seems to run a bit smoother.

  • While Blacksad: Under the Skin shows a lot of promise in its story, world and a couple of neat gameplay mechanics that help put you right in Blacksad’s shoes, it unfortunately suffers when it comes to the execution. Be it clunky pixel hunts, an awkward interface or a myriad of potential glitches, the end result comes off as a bit of a janky, unpolished mess. Pendulo isn’t exactly a perfect developer, but this may end up being their weakest work yet, at least until future patches can improve things. For now, though, best to just turn down this case.

About the game

A dark corruption scandal in the heart of the New York City's underworld for charismatic detective John Blacksad… The 50s, New York City: Joe Dunn, owner of a boxing club, is found dead. Meanwhile, rising star Bobby Yale, due to take to the ring for the most important fight of his career, has mysteriously disappeared. Sonia Dunn, Joe’s daughter, takes over the gym and must deal with its financial woes. She hires private detective John Blacksad to investigate Yale’s disappearance. This sinister case will take our investigator to the darkest, most dismal depths of New York. With its anthropomorphic characters and its incredible 1950s feel, BLACKSAD: Under the Skin promises all the eerily dark adventure of a detective novel, just like the eponymous comic book series. Conduct the investigation in your own way. Make use of your feline senses as you hunt for new clues. Make decisions on behalf of Blacksad and influence the outcome of the case.
