- Whether you played Half-Life back in the day or not, Black Mesa is definitely the best way to experience one of the crown jewels of first-person shooter history. It doesn’t look like a 2020 remake – because it’s not, really – but it still makes great use of the distinctively creepy atmosphere and excellent combat that left such a mark on this genre. And what better way to get ready for Valve finally returning to the Half-Life universe?
Dan Stapleton · Mar 13, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Now is the best time to jump into Half Life if you haven’t before, and if you’ve formally walked in Gordan Freeman’s boots then Black Mesa will set your heart a-thrumming in anticipation for Half Life: Alyx and whatever is to follow. Black Mesa may show its age in some areas, but that doesn’t detract from what is an otherwise stunning achievement. It’s not only Half Life at its best – it’s one of the finest shooters available today.
Brandon Adams · Mar 09, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Black Mesa is a project made out of passion and that can easily be seen throughout the entire playthrough, being çovingly crafted to keep the core and the spirit of the original game alive while also fixing some of its shortcomings. Being fans of Half-Life, The Crowbar Collective knew exactly what needed to be done to improve on the original. Not only is this a great game for fans of the original, but this is a perfect new entry point into the franchise.
Kyle Nicol · Mar 09, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Black Mesa is dated in several ways and the new Xen levels have some issues, but this is an excellent experience that old fans of Half-Life and people who may have never played it before should absolutely check out.
Andrew Farrell · Mar 05, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - It's amazing that something as elaborate and well made as Black Mesa is, essentially, a fan project. And doubly so that Valve allowed them not just to make it, but sell it on Steam too. This is a professionally made game, and arguably the best way to experience the events of the Black Mesa Incident on a modern gaming PC.
Andy Kelly · Mar 05, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Black Mesa remains true to the original Half-Life with updated graphics, improved sounds and redesigned levels. However, the graphics still look old for a “modern” game and loading screens are still a pain as it freezes the game for a few seconds.
Joshua (Shnook) · Feb 07, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Black Mesa even includes the original multiplayer mode, with the original maps, although it doesn’t seem to be very popular with players and is really only a curio. In less talented hands that could’ve been the fate of the entire project but rather than just modernising the graphics and controls this is a substantially better experience than the original game ever was.
GameCentral · Mar 10, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Black Mesa is made with love and it's also the product of unconditional love for Half-Life. You can sense that as you go through the game. Fortunately, it feels like an Ultimate Edition of sorts - the ultimate way to experience a classic. However, we couldn't completely ignore the minor technical bugs here and there, and if you were to hop into the game expecting a remake, then you could potentially be a little disappointed that Crowbar Collective wasn't able to take things further.
