- Despite its setbacks, Betrayer manages to remain a surprisingly enthralling adventure. While at times I got a little tired of the backtracking, especially toward the end, I was still sufficiently drawn into the game's mysteries, and found the combat to be especially enjoyable in spite (or perhaps because) of its simplicity. It's not an outstanding game in any one department, but it's an overall pleasant little title with a lot going for it.
Jim Sterling · Apr 05, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Unfortunately, it's hard to get invested in Betrayer's central mystery (or side stories) with how stretched out it is. A moody and affecting explorative experience is padded out with excessive combat and (necessary) fetch quest equivalents that drag you all along its repetitious landscape (forcing you into more and more combat) to pick up clues and talk to spirits.
Steven Hansen · Apr 05, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - It starts promising and gets better in the final act, but the bulk of Betrayer's journey is let down by inconsistent quality, repeat enemies, and investigative drudgery.
Tyler Wilde · Apr 04, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Betrayer’s unique setting, style, and grim stories that pepper the journey all make this a game that’s eye-catching at first glance and briefly emotional. But the things you actually do in this world rarely come across as anything other than uninspired. Dry combat and shallow objectives waste the potential.
Marty Sliva · Apr 03, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The odds are almost always stacked against you, and the repetitive conflicts they never seem like a fair challenge
Ryan Stevens · Apr 02, 2014 Reviewed on PC - Betrayer allows you to change its stark monochrome aesthetics by adjusting a set of sliders to tweak color levels to those of typical adventure games. But doing so removes the game's air of mystery, and it is the mysteries that make Betrayer such a compelling experience. A lot of riddles are solved by the end of the game, yet even as the final curtain falls, many more questions are left unanswered.
Cameron Woolsey · Mar 31, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Betrayer is a game that suckered me in with its alluring visuals, but once it had me within its grasp it outright refused to let me enjoy myself. This is a game that is far below the standard of quality one would expect from the creators of F.E.A.R., and further proof, if we ever needed it, that presentation shouldn’t take precedence over gameplay.
Paul Tamburro · Mar 24, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Betrayer faces interesting dilemmas. It has an intriguing story built from a great mystery and good gameplay to back it up, but feels unnecessarily punishing. It loves to throw players into open environments, but not tell them what’s going on. It’s a feast for the eyes and there’s fun to be had, but those who aren’t fans of games like Dark Souls will have a hard time getting enjoyment out of it.
Kevin Dunsmore · Mar 24, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Still, there are some decent features in Betrayer. It’s gorgeous to look at and your experience may be different from mine, depending on your luck. If nothing else, it has made me very excited to see what Blackpowder have learned from creating Betrayer, and I hope they can improve on the problems I encountered in the future.
Stephen Dunne · Apr 10, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - We thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the sound design is very good, but by the end it started to feel like a grind. Although it's not possible to make a universal recommendation, it's still worth a look if you enjoy single-player first-person experiences and are looking for something a little different, because Betrayer is most certainly that.
