Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon is a big departure from the mainline Bayonetta games usual formula. Instead of leaning on fast paced combat, scantily clad lead, a loud soundtrack and a story with a lot of killing and revenge. Instead, this is a family-friendly story, one that is told like a grand storybook and even has themes of love and friendship throughout.

  • Bayonetta Origins: Cereza & the Lost Demon is a charming action/puzzle game. Hardcore Bayonetta fans may not have much interest in seeing their heroine during her formative early years, but their loss is the gain of anyone seeking a wonderfully presented and consistently clever adventure.

  • Bayonetta Origins may be marketed at children, but it’s an extraordinary adventure. Whether it’s the action-packed combat, mind-bending puzzles, or genuinely heart-warming story, there’s something here for everyone.

  • It seems incongruous that Bayonetta – the gun-toting witch who canonically writhes about naked under a threadbare catsuit of her own billowing hair – would turn up in a prequel styled as though it were a children's storybook. And that the storybook in question is Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There.

  • The aesthetic and art style are phenomenal, and the game goes all-in on the storybook aesthetic in a way that arguably makes it the best-looking Bayonetta title. The use of colors and visual effects goes a huge way toward making it stand out, and while it may not have the highest polygon count, it manages to be one of the most beautiful games I've played this year. Excellent voice acting and music bolster the whole package. It's a fantastic-looking game in motion and a delight to watch.

  • From its charming storybook aesthetic to the beautiful presentation, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon culminated into a phenomenal experience that anyone, be they a series veteran of the Bayonetta series, or someone who has never touched the games as I did, can enjoy to its fullest.

  • Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon is a fantastic spinoff depicting an early adventure of a beloved character. Controlling both Cereza and Cheshire to solve puzzles and defeat faeries is a ton of fun, with a lot still left to discover even after the lengthy main story. This is a delightful start to what will hopefully be a fantastic sub-series.

  • Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon is a charming detour from the tone and style of the fast-paced action of the other games, exchanging over-the-top combat and its sleek direction for a more grounded and endearingly gorgeous presentation straight out of a fairy tale.

  • Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon is a weird beast. It’s a pretty decent game, with a neat level of presentation, and a nice change of pace from the tryhardish action seen in the main games. However, it’s also a game I simply cannot recommend at the suggested retail price.

  • Ultimately, Cereza and the Lost Demon succeeds more as a standalone, family-friendly fairy-tale puzzle game than as something that is inherently tied to the ultra-violent, over-the-top R-rated games that you’d associate with its main character. That’s not to say that Cereza is a bad game, because it isn’t, we’re just saying that you should keep your expectations in check.

    About the game

Long before this trainee of the dark arts would come to be called Bayonetta, she took a fateful journey into the forbidden Avalon Forest. Alongside her was Cheshire, her very first demon, possessing Cereza’s stuffed toy. Play as both Cereza and Cheshire and search through the treacherous forest to look for the power to save Cereza’s mother. Control both Cheshire and Cereza to solve puzzles and fend off fiends Any good story has a lesson about teamwork, no? In this tale, Cereza and Cheshire coordinate their efforts to fight faeries and solve puzzles. Use the Left Joy-Con™ controller to move Cereza and bind enemies with her magic. With the Right Joy-Con controller, move Cheshire to slash and chomp foes. Turn the pages of Cereza’s story as you explore the enchanting, storybook-inspired Avalon Forest Avalon Forest is just as beautiful as it is beastly. Each new area looks like it has been painted carefully by hand. Fully narrated story scenes are told through the vibrantly illustrated pages of a storybook. Be sure to stop and smell the roses in this whimsical world, but don’t tarry too long—the forest has a taste for lost witches.
