  • Being a Nintendo Switch exclusive is a detriment to its potential, and, as a result, we’re getting drab visuals, less impressive level designs, and serious framerate and resolution issues.

  • Bayonetta 3 serves as a confident reminder of why we’ve been looking forward to its release for so long. Unfortunately, the number of misfires can’t be overlooked, making this easily the least enjoyable game in the series.

  • The series has built a strong foundation from its characters and themes, and there’s an ample amount of lore to be explored. Instead, while it remains incredibly stylish and improves upon its sleek combat, the story offered here falls completely flat.

  • Whether it’s the story that feels compelled to make sure the entire cast is by themselves or the gameplay that overly relies on giant enemies, everything feels like it could have used another pass. The game is enjoyable but isn’t an experience I’d like to return to, like the first two entries of the series. This is disappointing as dancing with Bayonetta has always been a wonderful time before now.

  • Bayonetta 3 is an awful lot more, but it's also an awful lot more of the same. It's a game that revels in its spirited too-muchness, yet suffers for a tedious villain and new characters that suffer for, simply, not being Bayonetta. At least we have the multiverse and all the Bayonettas contained within.

  • It's a fun, often mechanically engaging ride held back by the hardware it runs on. Try as it might, the Nintendo Switch cannot contain the epic scale the game attempts. It would be easy to forgive these flaws for many titles, but the nature of Bayonetta's technical action requires precision, and this is by far the least precise of the trilogy.

  • In terms of gameplay, Bayonetta 3 is perhaps the best the series has ever been, but the story leaves a lot to be desired. Bayonetta 3's plot is nonsensical, even for Bayonetta standards, throwing itself head-first into the multiverse fad that's been dominating media for years now. Bayonetta 3 uses the multiverse for some cool moments, but it all gets off to a slow, plodding start with over-long cutscenes, lots of exposition, and poorly-written dialogue.

  • This is the worst looking and performing Bayonetta yet, with a grander scale that both detracts and adds to the gameplay. We love the fact that we can finally take control of fearsome demons, for example, but we don’t like the fact that the camera struggles when fighting other gargantuan enemies.

  • When all is said and gunned, Bayonetta 3 is a triumph. The story and characters stand on their own, making this entry enjoyable for newcomers and veterans alike. Bayonetta 3 has one of the fastest, tightest, most fun combat systems I’ve ever played. Weaving through incoming attacks, dodging perfectly to constantly activate the slow-motion “Witch Time,” and summoning demons to punish enemies is as smooth on the controller as it is on the screen.

  • Apart from a very minor handful of niggles, the game is a triumph, and we cannot recommend it enough to fans of the genre. The lower accessibility level makes it a bit more difficult to call Bayonetta 3 a must-have for more casual players, although we’d argue that the game is worth overcoming the learning curve.

About the game

Bayonetta struts through multiple locations in an all-new, over-the-top climax action game. Sporting a wicked new ensemble and somehow familiar pigtails, the titular Umbra Witch must face a mysterious evil using her signature guns and time-slowing Witch Time ability. This time, invading manmade bioweapons called Homunculi find themselves in Bayonetta’s crosshairs.
