  • Overall, Battlefield Hardline is an unremarkable release, and it really depends on what you want from a Battlefield title as to whether it’s worthy of your hard-earned cash. Those looking for more of the same Battlefield multiplayer action will no doubt lap this up; it changes very little to the tried and tested formula, and is therefore very easy for fans to jump into in order to experience new maps and game modes.

  • Visceral's first attempt at a Battlefield game isn't a bad one, but there's little here to be excited about beyond an actual functioning online component. The single-player is a bit off brand, which wouldn't be a problem if ever found its narrative voice and wasn't so awkward. The real saving grace is the solid multiplayer, which combined with new modes, gives Battlefield Hardline somewhat of an identity different from its predecessors. Hardline just doesn't do enough new to truly stand out from what came before. Though it's fun, Hardline is hardly the must-play Battlefield experience fans have come to expect.

  • Unless you have friends to play online with right away, wait for a price drop before pinning on your police badge or slipping into a ski mask. Hardline is good but it's not exactly a necessity. Hopefully the franchise will continue to take risks moving forward, because we do like what distinguishes Hardline from its predecessors; but a better sense of polish, refinement, and genuinely unique ideas are needed to make something truly special.

  • Battlefield Hardline does some stuff right, and the opportunity to be more was there, but Visceral didn’t seem to take it. A decent single player campaign that doesn’t do anything different from other police stories, and a multiplayer that should have been an expansion to Battlefield 4 much like Vietnam was an expansion to Bad Company 2.

  • But when it’s not infuriating, Hardline is fun—weird, chaotic, brutal fun. The multiplayer is the important bit, and it’s a parade of points, mini-achievements, goofy car crashes, motorcycles flying into helicopters, and incendiary grenades. It’s too much too fast, with a low time-to-kill that makes every life fleeting. It’s not elegant, but the lawless bedlam has its moments. When I’m doing well, getting kills and screaming around a map in a stolen sports car, it’s worth it.

  • Some fans of the series have been quick to declare that Hardline isn't a "true" Battlefield game due to the changes it presents. In truth, I sometimes miss the larger scale, slower pace, and heavy ordnance of Battlefield 4's multiplayer, but they don't have to be mutually exclusive. Both experiences are appealing in their own way, and I don't plan on taking Hardline out of my rotation anytime soon. Just do yourself a favor and skip the single-player campaign.

Battlefield: Hardline may seem like simply an expansion to the fourth entry in the game, but after diving in I enjoy it a lot more than the previous effort. The campaign is a breath of fresh air, and the multiplayer adds enough to make it stand out. I really hope they take their time with the next entry in the series and continue to build upon making the changes to the series that help it grow into a series I look forward to playing with each outing.

  • Battlefield: Hardline is a good game, there's no denying that, but it has a problem in the lack of any real stand out features, and justification for its existence. As a Battlefield game, it's solid and the new setting is fine. But it still plays and feels like a Battlefield game for the most part, especially online. ...Fortunately, although similarities may be present, Battlefield: Hardline's major strength is in how it physically executes its ideas, and how it plays, and there's little to complain about there.

  • However, it does do its absolute best, and in trying still manages to be a fairly enjoyable, if somewhat frustrated, production. At the very least, it’s “more Battlefield“, which is by no means a bad thing – yet – and at its highest points, it’s a bit of silly, Vice-inspired fun. I do not think the world will care to remember Hardline very much in future, but for what it is, it’s a good effort to be more than another disposable shooter, even if that’s all it really is at its core.

  • Hardline can still get chaotic but it’s far more grounded than the war-torn streets of Russia or China. ...While Hardline isn’t the Battlefield you may be used to it offers a unique approach that will surely please fans of the genre. The campaign is a big step up from previous entries and while the multiplayer anarchy has been trimmed down, the gameplay in its place is more tactical and intimate.

About the game

Join the Heist like a Pro. A security truck loaded with cash lays abandoned in a parking garage, and you only have seconds to cram as much cash as possible into your backpack before the cops arrive. Stray bills flutter behind you as you make a mad dash for the elevators. When you get to the roof a teammate jumps on the zip-line, but you choose a more direct route and swan-dive over the edge of the building. Your chute deploys. Bullets are whizzing far too close for comfort. The moment you hit the pavement it’s a straight-out sprint to the getaway van. Sirens are blaring. Cops are on the way. And that’s when you notice the massive crane crashing down. This is just a day in the life of the Battlefield Hardline player.
