- The multiplayer mode is nothing short of essential, but at the same time it's hard not to be sorely disappointed by everything else on show. Battlefield 3 isn't quite the Call of Duty killer many were wanting, then, and it's especially jarring to view EA's 'above and beyond the call' marketing brouhaha in light of the fact Battlefield 3 falls to its most damning lows when it's trying hardest to compete with the latter.

If you're a resolute campaign player who avoids multiplayer like a shark with a gun, BF3's single-player is simply not up to scratch in a year that has already given us Resistance 3 and Deus Ex. But if online is where it's at for you, Battlefield 3 is going to be one of your games of the year.
David Houghton · Jun 25, 2012 Reviewed on X360Read full review - The gameplay does remain strong for the most part, with the sections themselves feeling well-crafted, if maybe a little generic. Some highlights include scrambling for cover along a bridge as a plane makes strafing runs against you and retracing your steps at night through the previous level after it's been restructured by an earthquake. A few other issues bring it down though. Sometimes at night or at long ranges enemies can be a little too hard to spot, sure it's realistic, but not when the enemy and your allies all have perfect laser vision regardless.
Justin Clouse · Nov 03, 2011 Reviewed on X360Read full review - For all its similarities to the previous games in the series, Battlefield 3's multiplayer is still fresh and exciting. There's no other game out there that can provide the same chaotic spectacle, or the feeling of lying in the grass with friends, watching a battle roll towards you from the horizon. Even as the singleplayer is everything I hate about games, the multiplayer is many of the things I love about them.

Sure, the game is not perfect as the single player experience is somewhat generic and suffers from the “been there, done that” feeling, but come on, you know that most people aren’t buying this game for the single player play. In the end I think that fans of FPS games as a whole will enjoy this game, and those who are fans of the Battlefield series will find a lot to like here too.
djKail · Oct 31, 2011 Reviewed on X360Read full review - In the end, Battlefield 3 is the experience that PC First Person Shooter gamers are looking for. Sure, as a whole, the game is not perfect, but the feature-rich multiplayer is the king of the genre, and the class-based warfare will keep you coming back. The main campaign does lack innovation, but it is definitely one of the best of the franchise.
Darb2k · Oct 31, 2011 Reviewed on PCRead full review - When Battlefield 3 does its damnedest to go toe-to-toe with Call of Duty are the times it stumbles the hardest. But when DICE is doing what it's always done best, Battlefield 3 is a uniquely mesmerizing multiplayer game with a seemingly endless number of ways to feel like a success. It's not revolutionary, but it's the best Battlefield game, and that's saying a lot.
Arthur Gies · Oct 28, 2011 Reviewed on PC, PS3, X360 - Battlefield 3’s multiplayer is brilliant, which is really no surprise for this series. It perfectly combines the absolute chaos of open warfare with the methodical, calculating play that makes modern military shooters so satisfying. That’s what creates those Batlefield moments–when you crash a plane into a tank, hop out just before it hits the ground, and skid to a stop right on the capture point. While some control customization issues and ultimately, a disappointing single-player campaign keep this game from being the ideal package, it’s still a damn good one.
Lawrence Sonntag · Oct 28, 2011 Reviewed on X360 - The mediocre campaign is rather disappointing, and is easily the game’s biggest drawback – the real value here is in the competitive multiplayer modes. There’s plenty of great online competitive shooters out there, but few encourage friends to work together as a team with such refined gameplay, where vast terrains, powerful vehicles, and high-tech gadgets provide such a bevy of tactics and options to be utilized to conquer the enemy as Battlefield 3 does.
Tyler Minarik · Oct 28, 2011 Reviewed on PS3Read full review - Battlefield 3's competitive multiplayer is among the best in its class, providing immensely rich and immersive combat zones. Though there are still some intermittent server issues that might cause you to lose your connection or put you in an unpopulated game, these are infrequent occurrences that aren't likely to keep you from having a blast online. Battlefield 3 may not offer much beyond the multiplayer, but there are so many ways to contribute and feel like a powerful soldier that after hours and hours of playing, all you'll want to do is play more.
