- It's all presented wonderfully. Battleblock Theater is a very funny, sharply written game, narrated with incredible energy. Puppet theatre cutscenes put a smile on your face and intermittent lines of voiceover keep it there. Then there are the excellent songs, particularly the hilarious, nonsensical scatting that accompanies secret levels. There's a lot of The Muppets in Battleblock Theater, in the best possible way.
Chris Thursten · Jun 23, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The amount of content, style and polish in BattleBlock Theater is incredible and puts the efforts of many AAA developers to shame. The story and writing alone could fill a comedy club, but the accessible, addictive gameplay demonstrates a mastery of platformer fundamentals. The levels don’t push any polygons nor do they break the mold of how the genre should be played, but when it comes to tight design and constant creativity, The Behemoth have cracked that code wide open.
Alex Carlson · May 14, 2014 Reviewed on PCRead full review - BattleBlock Theater is filled with absurdity, fart jokes, and curious characters that will easily suck you into a colorful world. Its stages are creative and get more complex as you get used to its mechanics and controls and offer enough challenge and funny dialogue to keep you amused. Play it alone and you’ll laugh; play it with a friend (and push him off a ledge) and you’ll laugh even more.
Giancarlo Saldana · Jul 08, 2013 Reviewed on X360Read full review - You can get out of BattleBlock Theater what you put into it. The Behemoth had a lot to live up to after Castle Crashers and five years of development, but you can tell that they crafted the game with a lot of love. I’m not quite sure that BattleBlock Theater was worth the wait, but that certainly doesn’t make it a bad game.
Mike Gnade · May 08, 2013 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Castle Crashers was truly amazing for me, but this, this feels like more of the same, which I suppose isn’t necessarily a bad thing. That said, this game is one of the best titles available on XBLA right now, and for a mere 1200 MS points, Battleblock Theater offers a huge amount of content. With an extensive single player campaign, hundreds of items to collect, numerous multiplayer modes, and community created-uploaded levels, BattleBlock Theater gives you a lot of bang for your buck making this pretty much a no brainer purchase.
Jennifer Dingle · Apr 12, 2013 Reviewed on X360Read full review - BattleBlock Theater is a fine little game, and though it has charm and pizazz, it also comes of feeling a bit of a sideshow, just something to pull out on a rainy day for a fast fifteen to buy a new head, play a quick match, or toy around with a level idea. You’ll get your mileage, and scratch that itch to run, jump, and punch with wild abandon, which for fifteen bucks is A-OK.
Ryan Stevens · Apr 11, 2013 Reviewed on X360 - BattleBlock Theater is a refreshingly upbeat platformer that puts silliness and fun above all else. The gameplay is easy to grasp for platforming veterans, while the massive amount of content and alternate game modes ensure you'll be entertained for hours. You also may never look at your cat quite the same way again.
Marshall Lemon · Apr 10, 2013 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Even if you find BattleBlock Theater too challenging after the initial stages, you'll want to keep playing just so you can see where the story goes next, or because you're every bit as addicted to the platforming action as expert players are. There's no shortage of ways to play, whether that be alone, cooperatively, or competitively, and the capable level editor is the icing on the cake. Hatty Hattington and his friends may be living through an absolute nightmare, but you're bound to be so thoroughly entertained that you won't have time to empathize.
Jason Venter · Apr 06, 2013 Reviewed on X360Read full review - Don’t be fooled by BattleBlock Theater’s downloadable format and low $15 price tag; this is a massive game filled with opportunities for exploration, collection, and fun. Solo players can look forward to a great campaign that is only improved with a friend at your side. If no buddies are available, a smart matchmaking system assures you can explore even the story mode with an appropriate online partner.
Matt Miller · Apr 05, 2013 Reviewed on X360 - As a platformer with beat-em-up tendencies, Battleblock Theater is a rousing good time, alone or accompanied, and it weaves a charming tale throughout every challenge. It's a shame that the campaign doesn't support more than two players, but even so, the game is much less about cooperation and much more about thrashing your friends. In that regard, Battleblock Theater excels.
