    Battle Hunters is a great RPG that uses the urgency of its plot to create a focused gameplay loop that focuses on fairly strategic combat using a wide array of characters that were mostly throwaway pawns.

    Battle Hunters is an accessible game that’s clear in what you can do with some level of enjoyment. While the sounds are pretty poor, the game generally puts forth something solid that can be played by all ages. The only thing holding it back is that the combat system is also very basic with slow beginnings that always start the same. On top of that, there’s no real progression aside from leveling up heroes and unlocking new skills.

    If they end up adding a little bit of content I would say it’s a really good game that has the potential to be great if they were to also expand the story line and start to mix in some dynamic story telling aspects, maybe even have some sense of choice or non-linear exploration. As it is, I really have fun in the combat portion of this game. It is a LOT of fun, it just needs more substance to back up the hack and slash. What we have in Battle Hunters is a great frame work for a full fledged gaming experience.

    I persevered with Battle Hunters and finished it (admittedly after dropping the difficulty down) but there wasn’t really a point where I actually enjoyed my experience. The most frustrating thing is that there were moments when it nearly came together in tactical combat, but it was continually held back by the need to rest characters and not sharing XP to non-party members. As a result, this is one adventure in which too many heroes spoil the game.

    Battle Hunters takes the classic real-time strategy formula of classic RPGs, blending it with a generous roster of quirky heroes. Finding and levelling them all up takes time, but is the perfect basis for multiple sessions of short burst play.

    Despite all of its foibles and flaws, Battle Hunters is a product that’s more than the sum of its parts. The story is paper thin and the characters could have walked in off the set of any low budget fantasy movie but I find myself losing hours to exploring the world and it’s secrets without noticing.
