  • It might be four years later than its debut, but I’m glad I was able to experience The Banner Saga. I’m anxious for its sequel to arrive on Switch so I can continue my adventure through this Norse mythology-inspired land. If your favorite aspects of Fire Emblem games were the story and you’re antsy waiting for the series to arrive on Switch, sitting down with The Banner Saga might be a good way to sooth your tactical RPG desires.

  • The Banner Saga is a good game when it comes to it’s unique combat, art style, and atmospheric score but the awkward transition of the menus to console and the presentation of its plot hold it back from being great. Ultimately, if you haven’t played it already and are really, really into Viking themed fiction or turn based strategy games there’s fun to be had here, but it probably isn’t for everyone.

  • The desolate landscapes, the constant fear of death, the beautiful artwork, it's all top notch stuff. I'm just not sure the core mechanics that make up the bulk of actual gameplay are strong enough.

  • Sure, it’s not always perfect — the game’s lack of guidance, difficulty spikes and voice acting may occasionally leave you feeling a little lost and alone — but perhaps that’s just in keeping with the unforgiving Norse world that inspired it.

  • The Banner Saga is a gorgeously hand crafted game that will definitely appeal to a player looking for a certain kind of experience. It is slow-paced, broad strokes world building at its finest, and the care and thought that went into designing the look and systems of this game show. ...The adaptation to iOS, and small-form mobile platforms in general, feels like it could be a good fit with some tweaking but as it stands the experience is not ideal.

  • No bones about it: this is the complete Banner Saga experience, with no compromises to the already critically-lauded gameplay. Not only is this a title that should be played, it should be savored like a fine digital wine. Rarely do you see an iOS port that goes to such great lengths to preserve what made the PC version so special.

  • Banner Saga is one of the greatest adventure games, mobile or otherwise, that's come around in quite a long time. Not only is it interesting and accessible, but it's clean, ornate, and enjoyable through and through. If you only pick out one adventure game this year on iOS, make it this one.

  • I'm not the guy that gets hyped up for story based games. I am actually the antithesis to that guy. This is that game that will change your mind on story driven games. As soon as you get caught up in the story, Banner Saga will give you a ride well worth the price of admission.

  • The Banner Saga is a game that on the surface, in all respects, seems simple and straightforward. However, you can be greatly rewarded if you delve further into its history, story, and combat. It rewards those who are curious.

  • Ultimately, the steep learning curve and focus on statistics management which could be considered a hindrance is vastly outshined by The Banner Saga's absolutely memorizing production value. The artwork, music, voices, decision-making and nail-biting combat kept us thoroughly engaged with The Banner Saga: Chapter 1. Sure, its difficulty frustrated and the varying results of the decision choices left us frustrated quite a few times, but by the time the smoke settled, we were left eagerly awaiting The Banner Saga: Chapter 2.
