- Aven Colony is a unique take on the genre. It is also one that works surprisingly well on consoles. For those with the itch to build some cities and don’t mind the alien landscape I definitely recommend it.
Ken McKown · Aug 16, 2017 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Slightly above average or simply inoffensive. Fans of the genre should enjoy it a bit, but a fair few will be left unfulfilled.
Robo Panda Z · Aug 09, 2017 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Aven Colony has the trappings of a good city-building game but simply lacks the depth to make it so. While the game looks great and plays well, the setting of space is underused outside of its aesthetic and the lack of variety or challenge inevitably leaves the game feeling dull.
Chris Wray · Aug 02, 2017 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Overall, I had an absolute blast playing through Aven. It’s as absorbing as it is relaxing, and it does a good job at bringing its own to the table whilst still retaining what makes city builders fun and challenging. The challenges it brings are unique and fun, and though there might be a few changes I’d personally like to see added, not having them doesn’t deduct much at all from the gameplay.
Louis Stowe · Jul 25, 2017 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Though the campaign is unimaginative and some areas are not fleshed out as well as they could have been, the game is still addictive stuff.
Ken Barnes · Jul 25, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - I spent the equivalent of a working week playing Aven Colony and it was hard labor. This is a game of relentless concentration and chore-work, with only the briefest flashes of magic and relief, offering almost nothing new to the city building, or resource management genres.
Colin Campbell · Jul 25, 2017 Reviewed on PC, PS4, XB1Read full review - Despite its variety and the occasional innovation, Aven's lack of threat and mediocre story make the game feel undercooked. It's a sold city builder that doesn't do enough with its premise to stand out.
Will Borger · Jul 25, 2017 Reviewed on PC, PS4, XB1Read full review - Aven Colony is an addictive city-building game set on a planet called Aven Prime, with a science-fiction twist. Growing a small colony into a massively sprawling cityscape is a very fulfilling experience, with plenty of hazards and obstacles along the way. Whether dealing with the internal struggles of governing a wide population, or dealing with spores and creeps, there is always something that needs to be attended to.
Josh Di Falco · Mar 06, 2018 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - I walked away from Aven Colony both satisfied and disappointed. I was satisfied with the fact that titles such as this are finally becoming a norm on consoles, after years of widespread absence; but at the same time, I was also disappointed as despite of its mechanical greatness, I simply couldn’t continue playing it, as boredom would creep-in within an instant. And in combination with a surprisingly unstable framerate, and a selection of low-quality textures, it was enough to put me off.
Kamil Dyszewski · Sep 05, 2017 Reviewed on PC - Despite a few slight missteps, Aven Colony does a lot right and offers a city building experience with a difference. The basic premise is sound, and the execution is largely a success. In certain key areas, it lacks the kind of nuance that dedicated genre fans thrive upon, but newcomers (especially those playing on console) will warm to the accessible setup and compelling setting.
