- Bearing the eyes of scorn at another open-world Ubisoft game is an easy thing to do and is tough to resist. Frontiers of Pandora very often fall foul of trying so hard to be other Ubisoft games, that it forgets to be its own game, but even within the flickering attempts it makes to be itself it’s irksomely bland and lacking a reason to truly stake its claim as anything other than a companion piece to James Cameron’s Avatar films. The missions and the general gameplay are merely competent, stealth is workable but unsatisfying, investigations are boring and forgettable, and generally it’s hard to want to keep on persisting through Frontiers of Pandora. Accessibility options and the game’s visual identity are superb, but they fail to mask predictable Ubisoft trappings. Avatar fans will likely fall in love with this one, but everyone else will echo disgruntled sighs at yet another generic Ubisoft game. Ubisoft know they can do much better, they’ve shown that various times in the past, but Frontiers of Pandora is helplessly mediocre, wallowing in better Ubisoft franchises in a vain attempt to conceal the disappointingly stale reality that it’s just not good enough to be anything more.
James Davie · Jan 05, 2024 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora may be the most “definitive” Avatar experience in a game we will ever receive and that should be relatively sufficient for most. Often, its limitations extend to the boundaries of it existing as a game with rules and objectives carved into it. But an open world is the only way to truly suit the lofty goals of what Pandora actually means from an entertainment level. The home of the Na’vi is supposed to feel real, like a place we could reach if only humans had the capability. And in that sense, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is practically boundless.
BEN SHEENE · Jan 01, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - While playing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, I was constantly disappointed. Whether it be the game story, combat, or visuals, it felt like every step forward in a positive direction was followed soon after by two steps back. The game’s positive aspects are still good, and I’m sure diehard fans of the film will enjoy the realistic recreation of Pandora’s wilderness. However, given how flooded the market is with open-world games, I can’t imagine recommending Frontiers of Pandora to someone over the PlayStation’s first-party games like Horizon Zero Dawn.
Pedro Pérez Cesari · Dec 21, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Despite its occasional shortcomings, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is still a lot of fun to play. Flying an ikran does its fair share of wish fulfillment, but Pandora has a lot to offer elsewhere too. There’s a wealth of things to look for, and despite some alarmingly vast distances, exploration mostly remains entertaining thanks to the stunning scenery.
Heidi Nicholas · Dec 20, 2023 Reviewed on Series X|SRead full review - While Frontier of Pandora's open world is an audio-visual feast, the formulaic structure of its gameplay and the tools it give you to wade through it feels far too familiar to make it worth visiting for long.
Νικόλας Μαρκόγλου · Dec 16, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - The natural world of Pandora is the main star of this latest video game adaptation of the Avatar franchise. It's supported by the competent and familiar mechanics, but let down by the weak story and occasional lack of polish.
Alex V · Dec 15, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - While I eventually began having fun with Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, the game was a very difficult nut to crack. Rather than being open to the way I wanted to play it, Avatar pushed me to find the way it wanted to be played, and then kinda punished me for doing so. Frontiers of Pandora should feel free and flowing, but I've found a lot of the experience to be restrictive and near-punitive. Once I pushed through the game's many barriers to entry, I started having a good time, but don't expect to just jump in and have fun. Like Jake Sully, it's going to take a while to find your Avatar-legs.
Eric Hauter · Dec 15, 2023 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - While it's nowhere near a perfect game, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is an open-world adventure that fans of the franchise will love. DualShockers was provided with a copy of the game for review purposes.
