Astro Bot

- Astro Bot is such a wonderful experience, it makes me question if I’ve ever felt this much pure joy playing other games I’m fond of. From its tight design to its incredible visuals to mechanics that feel carefully tested to generate as much pleasure as possible, Sony has its new standard bearer for platformers. Astro Bot has always been good at propping up its contemporaries, but the adorable little robot can now proudly stand beside the PlayStation icons it so fondly celebrates.
Marcus Stewart · Mar 24, 2025 Reviewed on PS5 - I don’t remember the last time a video game just made me smile from ear to ear, making me hope it could never end. In fact, this may be Astro Bot‘s biggest issue: it doesn’t last forever. I simply want more of it. Astro Bot is serotonin in digital form. It’s a damn near perfect platformer, with phenomenal visuals, music, level design, and much more. It made me feel nostalgic for an entire brand I didn’t even grow up with back in my childhood. Even for someone whose entire childhood was spent with Mario and Master Chief, I embraced each and every reference included in this masterpiece as if they were speaking directly to my inner eight year old. I just loved this game so damn much. Thank you, Team Asobi. You guys have simply crafted what’s possibly the PS5’s magnum opus. Nay, the generation’s magnum opus.
Leo Faria · Sep 20, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Just like with the other Astro Bot games, all it takes is five minutes for the game to endear itself to players. There’s plenty of smartly executed nostalgia at play here, but the game does more than appeal to our fondness for past delights. Throughout, it uses its various characters to memorably tell tiny stories within the space, and every square inch of the galaxy is an invitation to explore, mess around, marvel, and laugh. Even while it offers its share of challenges, it’s designed in such a way to allow for fast, repeated tries instead of punishments. Astro Bot’s galaxy is alive, and vibrant, and welcoming. It’s a place to genuinely and truly play.

It takes everything that made that small tech demo a hit and builds on its best parts while improving on the shortcomings. There are a few frustrating moments and it isn’t flawless, but there is more than enough to keep you invested from start to finish. PlayStation has finally got a killer mascot on its hands, one that I hope it doesn’t forget about anytime soon. If you’re looking for a fun and cute adventure filled with challenging levels, addictive collectibles, and a plethora of PlayStation references, Astro Bot is the game for you.
Sam Flanagan · Sep 18, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Though I would prefer more open levels in the future, Astro Bot cements itself as PlayStation’s premier platforming series. This game solely brings back the golden era of PlayStation platformers like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. The sheer number of brilliant cameos show the right mix of nostalgia amidst expertly-crafted level design. If you’re looking for the purest form of video game fun but with modern mechanics, this is it.

A jubilant little adventure that dedicates itself fully to making an audience happy. For a neurodivergent player the visuals, sounds, and DualSense textures are indescribably satisfying. The accessible design makes it perfect for both children and adults. It’s a wonderful mascot platformer, the likes of which I’ve severely missed, and it’s the most tasteful way a game company has ever patted itself on the back.
James Stephanie Sterling · Sep 13, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - ASTRO BOT combines brand-new mechanics with a love for gaming. It's visually impressive with 4K, Ray Tracing, and ridiculously complex physics. Levels are quick, fun, and full of quality. It is a must-have title for all PlayStation 5 owners.
Ahnaf Tajwar · Sep 11, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - There are games that remind us why we fell in love with video games in the first place. In my opinion, Astro Bot is one of those games. It’s a phenomenally polished title, featuring great audiovisuals and, above all, brilliant gameplay that never gets boring.
Maciej Bogusz · Sep 10, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - The amount of dedication and passion that’s gone into Astro Bot is obvious in every pixel of every texture; there’s not a single bug, glitch, or texture issue to be seen. Its controls are easy to understand and incredibly tight, with Astro moving exactly how you need him to. In the 15 hours I’ve spent so far in finishing its campaign and going back to replay levels to pick up missing Bots, I’ve not encountered a single moment of frustration. It’s beautifully designed both in its self-contained levels and those dedicated to much-loved, Sony-exclusive franchises.
Jay Ball · Sep 10, 2024 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Honestly, I don’t have much else to say about Astro Bot. It’s not a game with a deep and rich narrative. Nor is deep in any particular sense. That’s not a criticism, it’s just that there’s not much to analyse based on how I usually focus on in my reviews. The game’s core quality is that it’s a whimsical, creative playground of ideas. We do need more of that in video games, and while the art style and overapplication of branding does deserve some reflection for what it implies about the relationship between video games, marketing teams, consumers and the idea that this is meant to be an art form, what is undeniable is that Astro Bot is worth every second you put into it.
