Critic Reviews
- Assassin's Creed Unity: Dead Kings may comprise part of Ubisoft's apology for the dire state of the primary Parisian escapade at launch, but you don't need to play it just because it's free. The bleak backdrop of Franciade sums up this miserable outing, as you engage in dreary underground missions built around the most rudimentary of brazier-based puzzles.
Sammy Barker · Jan 20, 2015 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Dead Kings brings back the challenge rooms from Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and Revelations. That means a dark, dank underground setting full of platforming and puzzles. If puzzles aren't your thing, Arno's latest tale may not be for you. For everyone else, it's a solid, but unspectacular addition to Unity.
Mike Williams · Jan 16, 2015 Reviewed on XB1 - Anyone that knows Assassin's Creed will feel an innate familiarity with Dead Kings and maybe even a bit of excitement (particularly the last section, which conjures memories of a classic series moment). However, there's an air of freshness about it that works in some ways and falls flat in others. Dead Kings isn't likely to reignite anyone's love for Assassin's Creed, but it certainly won't extinguish any existing flames, either.
Brett Makedonski · Jan 15, 2015 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - This new content is best experienced by those who have yet to complete the main story, since the Guillotine Gun is a sufficient stress relief tool for coping with Unity's glitches (although you will experience the story out of sequence). As much as I appreciated the shift away from the crime investigation premise of Assassin's Creed Unity, sending Arno on a mere fetch quest turns Dead Kings into the blandest kind of open-world adventure, in which a man who used to be a hero is reduced to a mere errand boy.
Miguel Concepcion · Jan 14, 2015 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - Dead Kings offers a surprisingly large bundle of new content that expands and improves on some of the best aspects of Unity's gameplay. Despite a lackluster story and some unnecessary new obstacles, its large playable area and unique underground locations give you lots of opportunities to use its explosive new weaponry, hone your stealth or combat skills or simply experience more of what you enjoyed about Unity’s original release.
Jon Ryan · Jan 12, 2015 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - We feel like this DLC is a reminder of everything we didn't like about a game we did like: it's glitchy, confusing, labyrinthian, dull and fiddly. We had fun with the hugely overpowered Guillotine Gun, but the puzzles and the maze-like tunnels made us curse the day Arno Dorian ever donned his hidden blades.
Kate Gray · Jan 16, 2015 Reviewed on XB1 - My main problem with Dead Kings is still the technical side of things. It simply doesn't run as smooth as you'd expect. Even underground. The framerate still dips, and a bunch of rather annoying texture issues plague the seemingly simple underground environments. It's painful to see how Unity's engine still struggles to deliver a smooth experience, and unfortunately this is a major negative for Dead Kings.
Magnus Groth-Andersen · Jan 15, 2015 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - They say time heals all wounds, but free DLC can't hurt either. Dead Kings offers much for those still enamoured by the series, and its offering as a freebie is a fine gesture to anyone left aggrieved by last year's failings. Still, time will tell whether it - or what Ubisoft has planned next - can convince those who have been put off by the series' longer sense of stasis.
