  • Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag doesn’t always sail a straight course, but this is still an excellent entry in an occasionally choppy property. Clumsy traversal mechanics and some dire mission types prevent the release from reaching legendary status, but the slick naval combat, luxurious landscapes, and surprisingly compelling online suite make this a package worth plundering.

  • If Assassin’s Creed grates on you and you’re tired of dumping money into games that are functionally identical in many ways, look elsewhere. But Assassin’s Creed 4 will please AC fans, and from a purely mechanical, gameplay standpoint, it’s probably the best game in the franchise to date. From that perspective, it’s a worthy investment. From others, like narrative, it leaves much to be desired.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is the entry that has drawn me back into the series. I had fallen off since Brotherhood, and with the latest offering I cannot recommend enough jumping back in. If the story beats concern you, I recommend heading to YouTube to see what you missed, but Black Flag really never relies on the narrative as heavily as previous games.

  • Overall, if you are wanting the complete Black Flag experience, then you can’t fault the PS4 version. It has all the visual and performance advantages of its next-gen counterpart on Xbox One, plus the added bonus of including the Aveline missions, which are exclusive to Sony platforms. In short, this is the definitive edition of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and one game you cannot afford to miss out on this holiday season, yer lazy sea slug!

  • That Black Flag's association with the Assassin's Creed franchise at times feels kind of tangential should really only be distressing to hardcore franchise fans desperate to see where the ongoing strife between Assassins and Templars is headed. For those who just like the idea of a game in which sailing and stabbing exist in harmony across a vast ocean of entertaining objectives, Black Flag most definitely delivers the goods.

  • Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is right up there with the best games in the series. Building a game entirely around the sea based features found in ACIII sounded gimmicky when it was announced earlier this year, but Ubisoft nailed it on all fronts. It’s a beautiful game, it’s fun to play, and it’ll last you tens of hours to complete. What more can you ask for? We’ll likely be seeing more of Assassin’s Creed in 2014, and just what’s up their sleeve for the next game, just got a lot more interesting.

  • With as many games as there are on the Assassin’s Creed roster every new game risks over-saturation, but Black Flag brings enough new elements to keep the gameplay fresh. No matter the debate about which new console looks better, Black Flag looks terrific on the Xbox One and plays just as good as it looks. This game certainly turned me in to a fan.

  • lack Flag is best regarded as a collage of the games and technologies Ubisoft have cultivated over the past decade. There are strong notes of Prince of Persia in the platforming challenges of the archipelago's Aztec ruins. You can put on hunters' rags and travel the world in search of rare prey. The sailing is a great element unto itself. Some of these aspects have been bettered in other games, but by brute force, Black Flag's varied components merge beautifully to create rich and constantly interesting world.

  • A solid but ultimately uninspired instalment in the series, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is comprised of ideas that are starting to wear thin. Anything but a major overhaul will do for the next game, especially now that we're at the dawn of a new console generation. No doubt Ubisoft Montreal is hard at work concocting the first true next-gen Assassin's Creed, because this certainly isn't it. By no means a complete shipwreck of a game, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is merely indicative of a series that's treading water and in serious danger of being consigned to the bottom of the sea. Can we have samurais next or something?

  • Even though it is cross generation, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is one of the must have launch games for the PS4 and should hold you over with its vast world until the next slew of PS4 titles hits the market. Ubisoft have proven that they are not milking the Assassin’s Creed franchise for all it’s worth as much as they are cultivating the great things about the series to continue to bring us amazing and fun games.

About the game

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag begins in 1715, when pirates established a lawless republic in the Caribbean and ruled the land and seas. These outlaws paralyzed navies, halted international trade, and plundered vast fortunes. They threatened the power structures that ruled Europe, inspired the imaginations of millions, and left a legacy that still endures.
