    It's almost like developer Hapa Games had two really cool ideas and tried to integrate them both into Ascendant, with mixed results. At times it has flashes of brilliance with its focus on raw skill and combat, and others, it feels like you're just aimlessly wandering another barren landscape, in search of a rush.

    Ascendant makes odd choices early on, but it's hardly fair to judge a game simply by the choices it makes. It's more important to point out the execution, which falters heavily. Even the best choices the game makes frequently end up being downsides to the game. Not once can it be found: a moment of genuinely enjoyable gameplay without it being mixed with poor execution.

    Ascendant is certainly enjoyable, but in relation to other games already available in the genre, there just isn’t enough variety to encourage replayability, and you may find yourself getting tired rather quickly of dying in annoying and unfair ways.
