  • It was fun, especially if you enjoy Metroidvania style games or Greek mythology. I’m excited to see more from Alientrap in the future. With previous titles Nexuiz and Capsized, they’ve already got a strong track record established for the independent market. In the meantime, I’ll get back to unlocking all the secrets of Olympus.

  • Apotheon's glory falls somewhere between Mt. Olympus and Hades. It's beautiful to look at, but clumsy to play, and yet the setting is so vibrant and the level design is so smooth you may continue onward in spite of your frustrations. With a bit more polish Apotheon could have been truly worthy of Godhood, but as it is, this is one very flawed, very mortal game.

  • The art, as you're likely already aware, is also stunning, modelled after ancient Greek pottery. We really liked the way the different areas employed slightly altered colour palettes, with Poseidon's section opting for blues, while Hades sticks with blacks. Apotheon is not perfect, but it's still more than fit for a God. Minor crashing and design issues aside, this gorgeously presented action platformer packs plenty of variety beneath its pottery-inspired shell. Plus, who doesn't love Greek mythology?

  • Apotheon showcases the Ancient Greek setting in a way that we haven’t seen before. Alientrap has struck a great balance between their core 2-D Platforming and RPG-lite mechanics, and a varied world that challenges players in different ways throughout the course of this tightly paced adventure.

  • Apotheon shares many of its narrative threads with God of War, but the differences pile up quickly. Where God of War sticks to video game tropes, Apotheon is content to ground itself in myth. This is a fantastical world where gods and goddesses roam the earth, but beyond that, there’s no need for the suspension of disbelief. Where God of War is flashy and bombastic, Apotheon is soft and personal.

  • Beyond Apotheon’s amazing presentation and story is a clunky, combat-heavy Metroidvania that rarely ever pushes players outside their comfort zone. The controls are already weak and frustrating, but even they pale in comparison to a combat system that can be easily abused. Apotheon doesn’t challenge the way it should, and with so many available weapons and tools, it’s insulting that the action is so one-note.

I give Apotheon high praise for its homage to old-school side-scrolling adventures and its ability to recreate the captivating style of Ancient Greek art. Unfortunately, a ho-hum story and frustrating controls prevent me from doing the same for its moment-to-moment gameplay. No matter how pretty it is, unless it nails the feeling of movement and smooth combat, an action-platformer can’t be much more than an enjoyable diversion.

  • For me, the rich single-player experience was more than enough. Not only is Apotheon a tireless devotion to ancient Greek art and culture, it’s also a damn fun game and one of my surprise early favorites of 2015. The unique look blends with inventive and diverse level design to create a fun 10-hour journey.

  • It's sure to capture the attention of anyone who sees it in action. Thankfully, the game more than backs up its aesthetic prowess with rewarding combat and exploration systems in place. While the combat hardly changes over the course of the adventure, Apotheon asks the player to apply their knowledge in such a wide variety of ways that it constantly feels fresh and exciting.

  • Apotheon manages to be a truly unique entry into what’s a decidedly overcrowded genre. With its polished design, excellent sense of story and beautiful aesthetic, fans of the platformer genre would be remiss to skip over it, despite its at times clumsy combat controls.
