  • Ape Out is the kind of game that makes you glad the indie scene exists. It defines the type of game that is very easy to pick up, but it takes some real practice to conquer. It places pure action over story, with the reward for surviving every encounter being pure satisfaction. Failure is met with an immediate desire to try again instead of groaning in frustration. It's a gorgeous game, but more importantly, it ends way before the premise wears thin. In short, Ape Out easily goes on the list for one of the best titles of the year.

  • While it can be fun to run around smashing stuff and listening to a cool soundtrack, Ape Out is a bit of a one-trick pony. When you boil it down, it’s a maze runner with a smash-the-bad-guys element. Don’t get me wrong—the theme may be simple, but the game is fun to play. It’s challenging enough to keep you entertained for several hours so go let your inner monkey run wild for a while.

  • This is not a perfect game, however, and if you don’t take to the aesthetics or need a narrative function to your bid for freedom you will be left wanting. However, if you remember the cathartic joy of Carmageddon or love Hotline Miami, there’s something in Ape Out for you. Get your gorilla on and Ape Out, it’s fantastic! Ape out is available now on PC and Nintendo Switch. Alternatively, check out more information on the official website.

  • In conclusion: Ape Out is an incredible time from start to finish. If you’ve been on the lookout for another title that could scratch the itch that Hotline Miami may have left, you’ll find that here and so much more. I wouldn’t say this game will make you into a fan of the top-down shooter genre, but it’s definitely one of the most imaginative and adrenaline-fueled options out of the shrewdness (a group of apes). If not for the spectacular and simple gameplay alone, you owe it to yourself to experience the audio-design; it is quite simply something else. If that wasn’t all enough, there’s a powerful message underneath all the blood and crisp cymbals. It goes to show that you shouldn’t put Kong in the corner, he may just push back.

  • It’s that rare sort of game that treads a fine line between what are often diametrically-opposed ideals. It’s stylish but substantial. It’s difficult but achievable. And most of all, Ape Out is technically so very clever – to the point where it could be a technical showcase as much as it is a video game – but it is still an absolute riot to play.

  • That said, some minor tweaks to the procedural level generation and more options to take out goons could have given Ape Out the tools to rise to the top. A sequel could do more to improve on the gameplay formula and should be on everyone’s radar, assuming Ape Out 2 is planned for the future, of course. Until then, Ape Out remains as an experience everyone should give a try, even if its gameplay does not quite meet the savory standards of its own presentation.

Ape Out is a game that is entirely the sum of its parts. Whilst many indie games look stylish, or sound cool, or have a solid gameplay mechanic, rarely do all three coalesce into something so memorably original. Ape Out will surely be one of the most unique games of 2019 and whilst it’s short, it packs a knockout punch.

  • Ape Out is so thunderously stylish and thematically strong that I like it even though it loses its thrust so quickly. It evokes anxiety and fear with brutal efficiency, so if you've ever wanted to feel like a cornered animal—or me whenever someone asks me a direct personal question—here's your chance. Those uncomfortable feelings just aren't balanced with quite enough triumph.

  • If you’re looking for something with a deep story, items to collect and a leveling up system, then Ape Out is not what you’re looking for. However, if you want something that gets straight to the point and plays like Quentin Tarantino’s take on the Cowboy Bebop opening, then get ready for some whiplash whilst spanking the monkey.

  • Should you dive into APE OUT? Indie junkies who were enamored with Hotline Miami beyond its aesthetic will find lots to like about the feel of the combat and tight integration with the soundtrack. The close-range action has a better feel than most top-down games that lean on firearms. The game is a tight package that hits all the right notes when things are working well, though it can possibly push you into madness if you falter. 8/10 dismembered arms
