  • Ultimately this isn’t the best way to play the game by any stretch – it’s almost unintelligible at times when played in handheld on Switch – but for those who are looking for a sometimes intimidatingly deep single player strategy experience on the console it’s hard to find much better out there than Ancestor’s Legacy.

  • While Ancestors Legacy might not live up to every expectation, it still is a good real-time strategy game. With an interesting story, great battles, and diverse levels, gamers looking for a solid RTS on the Switch should undoubtedly check out Ancestors Legacy.

  • I wish I could recommend Ancestors Legacy to Switch players.  I wish I could say I had an amazing time and couldn’t put it down.  Unfortunately, I mostly just wish I had played it on PC.  As my brother told me, “not every game belongs on the Switch.”  I suppose he was right.

  • Ancestors Legacy is a title I’d love to see a follow up of on Switch. It places the groundwork for a legitimately great RTS implementation on consoles while lacking in a few key areas. The removal of multiplayer certainly hurts it’s long term appeal but the variety of single player options help to make up for it.

  • Ancestors Legacy is a genuinely good console strategy title, with Destructive Creations having ported the game over well with improvements to UI and controls to make it as playable as possible on a gamepad. As for the game itself, while simplistic compared to other strategy titles, it offers a great jumping-in point for those new to the genre. Even those familiar will find something enjoyable within, with a well-balanced (albeit small) roster of factions supports a strong multiplayer, even a decent, albeit repetitive campaign.

  • Ancestors Legacy felt too much like a chore to play. Saying this doesn’t bring me any joy because the Middle Ages setting and the presented factions were actually cool. The idea to make a history-based, story-driven RTS title with dynamic features could have been great, but all these sides didn’t mesh well here. I really wanted to get into the gameplay, but the best I could muster was excitement for engaging cutscenes and disturbingly alluring images.

  • If you’re looking for a beefy console RTS experience that’s inspired by real events and oozing violence out of every bloody orifice, then look no further than Ancestors Legacy. It may not be the perfect experience, but it’s shockingly solid, especially when you consider the design hurdles that the development team must have been facing. This is the perfect entry-point for anyone who’s been curious about real time strategy, when armed with only a Dualshock.

  • Ancestors Legacy is a game of historical greatness, featuring real battles from times gone by, easy to grasp controls and some great stories. It has its bumps, but is a title that you will keep coming back to. Whether you’re a Viking lover or a Polish shield bearer, there is a faction for you. I’d liked to have seen some element of multiplayer through the campaign – as it is, though, there’s a pretty great RTS here for console players to get stuck in to.

  • Ancestors Legacy is a very unique game, even if it does feature the same war and conquer elements that we want from RTS games. I can’t deny that the different missions all look rather the same, regardless of which European country you happen to be torturing, but the game makes up for it with the detailed cutscenes. It’s interesting to see a game that takes real-life events, albeit events that happened so long ago it’s okay to have fun with them and shows them in a way that’s enjoyable for a modern audience. Sure, that whole running across Europe pillaging and cutting heads off was awful when it was happening- but I’m sure those tortured would feel better about it if they knew sometime in the future there would be a decent game inspired by the events.

  • It’s a badass strategy simulator, one with deep gameplay and that glorifies what is maybe one of the most gnarly periods of human history. It makes for a wonderfully executed strategy experience. But I still long for the day that we leave behind this whole “historical accuracy” fallacy and devote our fantastic game development resources to something more deeply imaginative.
