Amid Evil is a great throwback to old-school shooters like Quake, and this VR version features some incredibly satisfying combat with immersive controls. However, it is sorely lacking in comfort options which makes it hard to get through even a single level in one session. This works best as a compliment to a flat version.

Amid Evil VR features the best of what a VR device with two analog sticks can offer: freaking insanely, vomit-inducing, fast-paced shooting action. Upon turning off all comfort features, I was waltzing around like a lunatic, swinging my axe around as if my name was Gimli. The physics were sound enough; whenever I’d attack an enemy with my axe, I’d feel its body just shattering in front of me.

Amid Evil is a superb first-person shooter crafted in the classic style, and a more than worthy spiritual successor to Heretic. But it's more than either of those things: it is its own masterpiece, an instant classic for all times.

At its best when the screen is full of enemies, Amid Evil is a badass monster mash.

Amid Evil does everything possible to let the player have a blast in the intricate landscapes of its mystical realms, tearing through a paper-thin quest to exterminate the corruption of the land while tackling the more important task battling and exploring every square inch of the map.

Even if you’ve already tired yourself out on retro shooters, Amid Evil deserves your attention as a well-crafted and unique entry in the genre. Whatever New Blood Interactive ends up doing next for FPS, it’s going to be hard to top this opening one-two punch.

I'm not as over the moon as I was with DUSK, but that's like saying you didn't enjoy driving the Camaro as much as the Corvette. Obviously the sports car is nicer, sleeker, and prettier, but the muscle car is still a damn fine piece of machinery. Amid Evil is much the same. This is another wonderful FPS from New Blood that pays homage to and improves upon the past in all the ways you could hope for. Do you really need me to say anything else?
