  • It has some replayability, with dog tags, audio logs, and legendary weapons to find, but the core gameplay is so dreary that it's unlikely that you'll be lured back for a second round. If anything positive can be said about the game, it’s that it has made us want to watch the Aliens films again – primarily so that we can contemplate what could have been.

  • All in all, Aliens: Colonial Marines is a missed opportunity. The game feels disappointing. Some fans may enjoy the nostalgia the game instills in them, but it suffers so severely from a lack of optimization on the console that most people will be turned off. Fundamentally, it is flawed with poor design and weak content. Colonial Marines feels dated, and fails to capture any essence of what an Alien game should be.

  • Gaming owes a lot to James Cameron's Aliens films, but despite having its DNA present in just about every science fiction game ever made, Aliens has struggled to get a proper one of its own in the past decade. Aliens: Colonial Marines continues this disappointing trend, making for an experience that's more Aliens: Resurrection than it is Aliens.

  • Aliens: Colonial Marines is not the bad game that most reviewers have made it out to be. With the reviews it's been getting, you would think it was unplayable! However, the hoax that Pitchford sold with his video demo two years ago has clearly poisoned the well. Everyone seems to want to know: Where is that game? With Colonial Marines supposedly outsourced, all the talent went to Borderlands 2, I guess.

  • Reading through this you might think that ACM really has no redeeming qualities, and you would probably be correct. Other than the fact that it is using the Alien IP, the game fails to bring any tension even in the simplest of ways, as it trips over its own feet at every step. It feels like a rushed product in almost every aspect of its design, and for something that could have been so great, it is now little more than a black mark on Gearbox Software’s track record.

  • The first tactic smacks of relatively harmless publisher cynicism. The second is shockingly insidious. After playing Aliens: Colonial Marines, I’m no longer scared of aliens, or Weyland-Yutani. But I’m a little more worried about real life.

  • Aliens: Colonial Marines is a fully functional FPS title that can be enjoyable. I just turned down my expectations, ran around and shot the hell out of my targets. It definitely reminded me of my time with Quake 4 and Doom; an experience I look back on fondly. Still, for a full retail-priced game, Aliens: Colonial Marines is not up to snuff with the competition.

  • Instead of the properly reverent Aliens sequel Gearbox supposedly set out to make, they've shoved this awful, grotesque thing into the chest cavity of the very franchise that they purported to love. I kind of hope that disappoints them, because it sure as hell disappointed me.

Aliens: Colonial Marines looks like Aliens, and sounds like Aliens, but unfortunately it just doesn’t feel like Aliens. Instead, it feels indistinguishable from almost every shooter you’ve played in the past twenty years.

  • Aliens: Colonial Marines is deeply underwhelming. Neither staged carefully enough to be scary nor dynamic enough to be exciting, it succeeds only where other players are capable of breathing life into it. There are better linear shooters, better asymmetrical multiplayer games, and better Aliens sequels, and your love of the motion tracker and pulse rifle would need to be profound to surmount those obstacles.
