- Much as I like the Age of Empires games, Age of Mythology's god powers and myth units dial up the fun factor significantly. The dramatic graphical update and small but sensible gameplay tweaks in this Retold edition make it easy to recommend for new and returning players alike.

In a genre that has failed to bring its renaissance, the Age of Mythology: Retold stands strong as a mythical figure, risen from legends forgotten. It is a must-get for players, be they fans of the old game, Age games, or just RTS games in general. Prostagma!

It brings enough changes to the table to offer a new experience, but at the same time one that is in other ways bound in the past. Both this and its less than optimal visuals make it feel a bit stuck between old and new. For those simply looking for a nostalgia fix, the added features and changes don’t necessarily outweigh the more classical feel of the Extended Edition, which has been out for many years. For completely new players on the other hand, Retold would make for a perfectly good entry point into the RTS genre, if not quite a definitive one. In the end, those likely to find the most enjoyment in Retold might be existing fans of Empires or Mythology who are looking for a shake up, or any players that simply find themselves starved for a good RTS. Ultimately, even if it might not win over everyone, it can’t be denied that Mythology was indeed a tale worth retelling.

Les deux studios responsables de cette version ont travaillé sur de nouvelles façons de rendre Age of Mythologie Retold plus attractif, en améliorant non seulement ses visuels, mais aussi son gameplay, tout en préservant son identité d’origine, et c'est plutôt une réussite malgré quelques maladresses. Que son prix de 40 € soit justifié ou non, ce remake a su répondre aux attentes en modernisant le jeu tout en conservant son charme et son gameplay emblématique. Le fait que le DLC sur la chine ne soit pas présent est tout même dommage.

It retains the gameplay loop and iconic soundtrack of the original 2002 release, improving upon it by featuring brand-new visuals, a vastly more intuitive UI, and a plethora of small quality-of-life perks. It’s the game I grew up loving to death, but better than ever before. There’s nothing else that needs to be said. I just want to go back to a skirmish map and obliterate a bunch of Norsemen with the power of my phoenixes and brainwashed rhinos. And before you ask, yes, “O CANADA” is still a thing.

Dat komt deels doordat de game zo goed is gestroomlijnd, met een perfecte balans tussen uitdaging en creativiteit, maar ook omdat het zichzelf niet al te serieus neemt. Waar de nieuwste Age of Empires-game af en toe voelde als een geschiedeniscollege, is Retold gewoon lekker ravotten met soldaten, helden en goden. Dit is zo’n spel dat je kan blijven spelen, en eens in de zoveel tijd weer eens installeert om er een tiental uur in te steken. Een klassieker in elke betekenis van het woord.

Hem nostaljiye hem de modern RTS beklentilerine hitap eden bu oyun, eski fanlar için bir geri dönüş, yeni oyuncular içinse harika bir başlangıç noktası sunuyor. Eski dostları yeniden ziyaret etmek ya da yeni bir mitoloji macerasına atılmak isteyen herkes için Retold, kaçırılmaması gereken bir deneyim.
