  • Age of Empires 2 might be showing its age a little, even with the Definitive makeover, but it is still – and always will be – a timeless classic in the history book of video games, and remains as addictive as ever.

  • This was a bold attempt by Microsoft. I applaud them trying to adapt the most mouse-friendly game in existence to a console, with a controller. It’s still fun, and it’s certainly very playable, but it’s off-putting. It’s far from being the ideal way to experience this classic, and to be fair, the PC version isn’t even THAT demanding, even on laptops. I really don’t know who this particular port of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is for.

  • Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition feels good to play on Xbox and that stems from the fact that a few new interface mechanics were added to the game to make it play better for consoles and controllers. There's even a new tutorial that I highly suggest playing through that explains these new Xbox mechanics.

  • The only reason to keep hold of the original is to preserve those big beautiful boxes PC games used to ship in. We're in a new age now, and Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is the perfect example of taking an ancient game and giving it just enough love to make it feel almost new, something that many other remasters and re-releases so often miss the mark on.

  • Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is the champion of the RTS genre we deserve. The title itself may be twenty years old, but that hasn’t stopped this edition from being the best on the market. With aesthetics being painstakingly remastered and restored for modern systems, Age of Empires II has never looked or sounded better. Brand new, never-before-seen content is introduced to make the title more than just a remaster of an old game. New campaigns, new civilization and new modes make this a brand new experience for all kinds of fans.

  • The definitive edition of Age of Empires II has been made with a lot of love and care for the original – the nostalgia it creates in itself is almost a form of time travel. The passion Forgotten Empires and Microsoft have for this title really shines through. Though there are some performance issues, which hampers the experience a little bit, overall this is a remaster done the right way and fills me with hope for the eventual release of Age of Empires IV.

  • Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is the same Age of Empires that people got to love, but with some improvements that arguably should have seen the daylight at the last HD remaster. That being said, the improvements work, look, and sound great, and it’s a nice version to have if you want to have Age of Empires at its best or didn’t play the expansion sets yet.

  • While this is a pro for many who enjoy a more thoughtful pace, this can also make Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition feel slow or sluggish, especially when you're strapped for time. Combined with jittery multiplayer performance, this can make it difficult to find an online game that lasts from start to finish.

  • The small tweaks to gameplay make it easier than ever for new players to come aboard, and the new features like built-in game recording and the fantastic visual overhaul mean it’s a treat for Age of Empires stalwarts, too. There’s no reason to go back to the original now, and its generously low price (£15/$20) makes Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition an easy must-buy.
