- Nostalgia can be tough. For those gamers who played Age of Empires (and, indeed, the excellent Age of Empires II) at launch, this Definitive Edition is likely to stir up mixed emotions. For what it’s worth, this is a really strong remaster that brings together the best the original has to offer, with a robust visual and audio overhaul.
Sophie Halliday · Mar 09, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Age of Empires: Definitive Edition deserves respect for all that it has done in PC strategy gaming. It was an inspiration for many more games to come, and the jumping off point for many seasoned gamers. The graphical and audio enhancements are phenomenal and huge selling points, but having a pretty game without responsive AI quickly makes those enhancements meaningless. The heart and soul of the game is there, even in the tutorial, but it’s simply too old.
Alexander Thomas · Feb 27, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Since the definitive edition of Age of Empires II is coming, it’s likely that Age of Empires: Definitive Edition will soon be consigned to the dustbin of history, just as its predecessor was. But that doesn’t mean that what’s here is without value. This is still a good game, whether you’re on your first trip through history or just here for the nostalgia. But as we know, all empires fall, and the legacies they leave behind are less important that what emerges from the ashes afterwards. That’s where the real excitement is.
Will Borger · Feb 27, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Age of Empires: Definitive Edition has certainly got the nostalgia factor going for it. Despite its age, and the numerous problems that come from it, Age of Empires is still a good strategy game. The major issue is that everything about the game has been refined and done better, even by its own successors. As a way to promote Age of Empires IV, it's a sensible move. As a way to revive the series using older titles, that was already done best with Age of Empires II HD.
Chris Wray · Feb 24, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - If you're set on playing the original Age of Empires, this is far and away the best way to do so. That said, real-time strategy is a very feature-heavy genre. While this is the tightest the original AoE has ever been, it’s still sluggish and stripped-down compared to almost any modern offering.
Daniel Starkey · Feb 22, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - With 'Definitive Editions' of the later installments on the horizon, Age of Empires is once again poised to be overshadowed. If you have an overwhelming sense of nostalgia about the birth of the series, this does an excellent job of preserving it while making it considerably more palatable, but for a trip down memory lane, it sure is expensive.
Fraser Brown · Feb 21, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is easily the best way ever conceived to play this classic game, complete with revamped visuals and soundtrack, but the game still suffers from some limitations imposed by the fact it’s little more than a remake of a twenty year old game. Nevertheless, I can’t help but feel satisfied with this title, as well as glad about the sudden resurgence of the RTS genre. I also can’t help but look forward to the next Age of Empires installment due to come out later this year. Wololo all the way, baby!
Leo Faria · Feb 19, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - The Windows 10 restrictions simply do the development team a disservice. A lot of work went into Age of Empires: Definitive Edition and just enough tweaks were made to ensure that it's still relevant in 2018. I have an incredible amount of respect for the folks who brought this classic back to life, and for their restraint to ensure that this remaster doesn't abandon its roots.
Chris Mc · Feb 19, 2018 Reviewed on PCRead full review - It's hard to figure out just who Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is for. For each thing it does right, it does one or two other things wrong. Veteran fans of the original game will find that beyond the base improvements, it hasn't aged well in the last 20 years. While it is certainly one of the most accessible RTS games I've ever played, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition does feel too outdated for newcomers.
