- 9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a solid package. The story and characters are forgettable, but the action is excellent once you get over a few annoying fights and power up. The game comes in at a decent length, and the presentation is good with a few incentives thrown in to make you want to attempt another run at the campaign to unlock everything.
Cody Medellin · Feb 22, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Beat-em-ups are a dime a dozen, but 9 Monkeys of Shaolin is at the very least different from many of the other offerings on the Switch. From the complexity of the combat system which offers plenty of potential for variety in gameplay, to the inspired visual presentation, it’s easy to recommend to any fan of the beat-em-up genre.
Jaime Carrillo · Dec 02, 2020 Reviewed on SwitchRead full review - I had a great time with 9 Monkeys of Shaolin. It was a fun time for the most part, and I constantly wanted to experiment with the different gear and skills. It was one that I always found myself jumping back into it just to get a few more levels in. If you’re a fan of the beat ‘em up genre, this is one you will need to check out. It has the style and the complexity to keep players having fun for the entirety of the game.
Drew Leachman · Oct 28, 2020 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - If you’re a beat-’em-up fanatic with a PlayStation Store balance to burn, 9 Monkeys of Shaolin might soothe your fighting spirit for an afternoon or so. But at $30, it’s hard to recommend to all but the most pugilistic players out there. If you’re looking for a PS4 brawler with a bit more meat on its bones, I’d recommend getting your hands on Fight’N Rage or Streets of Rage 4 first.
Francis DiPersio · Oct 26, 2020 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - 9 Monkeys of Shaolin is not anything to write home about, nor is it a must-play rebirth of the beat ‘em up genre that the publishers and developers claim it to be. Although the game provides aesthetically pleasing environments and some enjoyable music, it ultimately suffers from an uninspired and one dimensional co-op beat ‘em up experience and is hamstrung by a vanilla cast of characters.
Adam Vyfhuis · Oct 21, 2020 Reviewed on XB1 - 9 Monkeys of Shaolin is an enjoyable beat-em-up and it gets a lot of things right in this day and age. The shorter levels, variety of enemies and the variety of attacks make for a fun experience. It is better played with a friend and you can tweak the difficulty to increase the challenge. The game is quite short though however and may not be something you would come back to, but it is still a decent beat-em-up.
Graham Cameron · Oct 15, 2020 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - 9 Monkeys of Shaolin is still worth a look for those who want more side-scrolling shenanigans though; it’s just not likely to wow them in any way. Everything about it is decent but nothing more, resulting in a romp that’s enjoyable enough in short sittings but tiresome in the long run. It tries its best, but it simply fails to excite like it should.
Richard Seagrave · Oct 15, 2020 Reviewed on XB1Read full review - There really isn’t much else to say. 9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a great beat-em-up with a strong presentation, excellent combat, and killer level design. Anyone looking to beat the hell out of dudes with a staff quite possibly can’t find a game that fits the bill better.
Andrew Farrell · Oct 15, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Thankfully, even though 9 Monkeys of Shaolin is far from perfect, it features a great combat system that just makes you want to play it more and more. There’s no shortage of great beat ’em ups these days, but if you’re into kung fu movies and Chinese epics, give 9 Monkeys of Shaolin a shot.
Leo Faria · Oct 15, 2020 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - I was pleasantly surprised by how satisfied I was walking away from my time with this game. The growth in combat complexity was not only satisfying, but the various upgrades and equips allowed multiple strategies and approaches to levels that were surprisingly robust. There’s a beauty to the clean but vibrant backdrops and interstitial drawings. 9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a rewarding beat-em-up that belongs in every fan’s library.
