- 2Dark bravely portrays themes that most developers lack the guts to touch, but unfortunately, AI, UI, and Level Design problems make this game feel largely unfinished.
Daniel R. Miller · Apr 11, 2017 Reviewed on PCRead full review - I will also admit that I a well-seasoned stealth genre gamer and after figuring out the inventory system, I found the game to be quite my level of game play as the whole light and dark system is rather simplistic. However, a lot of the success was dependant on forward planning. Players who are more adept at stealth games might find 2Dark to be too easy and less satisfying.
Thi Chao · Mar 24, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - For its asking price, a nine-hour campaign seems more than reasonable for 2Dark, especially since it’s such a well-developed game. It isn’t without its issues, but the minor frustrations don’t take away from the overall quality of the story and the game. If you enjoy a good horror with a bleak tale – and can stomach seeing pixelated children in cages or mauled by animals – then 2Dark is definitely worth checking out.
Daniel Batoff · Mar 17, 2017 Reviewed on PCRead full review - For all of that, I must say that 2Dark is a fun and interesting little game, but at the end of the day it wasn’t knocking my socks off. The game became repetitive, frustrating, and uninteresting all too quickly, and each level takes less than an hour to complete unless you run into a bug or a figurative wall when it comes to progression. Nevertheless, I’ve played better stealth titles that offered more varied gameplay, and unless you’re a big fan of the noir genre or enjoyed the Alone in the Dark series, you can probably write this small title off.
Beth Meadows · Mar 11, 2017 Reviewed on PCRead full review - In summary, 2Dark is an atmospheric experience, and while it isn't an out-and-out horror game, the game blends elements of survival horror with the main gameplay chiefly revolving around sneaking in a furtive manner through levels. The atmospherics are striking, and the cartoon-like animations work well as a contrast.
Nathan Hunter · Apr 19, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - At the right price point, 2Dark could be an interesting curio. Its flaws might have been more forgivable. I know price shouldn’t really affect your enjoyment of a game, but when it’s twice the price of smarter horror games like Resident Evil HD and Lone Survivor, and is more expensive even than the Amnesia Collection, you can’t help but see its faults all the more clearly. And 2Dark is a game chock full of faults.
Gary Bailey · Mar 27, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Visually and thematically, 2Dark succeeds in paying homage to its forebears. Everything else, however, is desperately lacking. Alone in the Dark had twenty years in which to rise and fall but Raynal’s latest stab at survival horror barely gets twenty minutes.
Jim Hargreaves · Mar 21, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - 2Dark tries to do too many things at once. Its stealth mechanics, while occasionally satisfying, are frustrating and pedestrian. Similarly, its attempts at horror, while presented well, are undermined by bad writing and repetitive gameplay. A lack of clear signposting and a terrible UI do nothing to help this maddening experience.
Kell Andersen · Mar 21, 2017 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - 2Dark presents a series of clever ideas but squanders its potential on an incoherent narrative, frustrating gameplay and distinct lack of horror vibes. While credit is due for the brave subject matter, it's disappointing to see it was never utilised in any impactful way. The game falls flat in most areas, offering little more than promising concepts and clever attention to detail. To enjoy the gameplay for more than a few hours, patience really is a virtue.
Kerry-Lee Copsey · Mar 18, 2017 Reviewed on PC, PS4, XB1Read full review - Despite the pedigree of the developer, and some unusually disturbing subject matter, the main enemies in this survival horror are frustration and boredom. The subject matter is extremely brave and the basic concept seems to have a lot of promise. Some clever details and plenty of tension. Frustratingly imprecise controls and tedious, repetitive gameplay that’s too reliant on trial and error. Bizarre storytelling and visuals. Far too expensive.
