  • 20XX is an action game that harkens back to the glory days of retro platforming. Its strong Mega Man influence is countered by its own flavor of procedurally generated levels, keeping things fresh at first, though there is some repetition after awhile. With interesting bosses and a great co-op mode, platforming fans should find something to enjoy here.

  • Part of the reason why 20XX exists is Capcom’s negligence of the Mega Man series. Batterystaple Games has successfully taken the Mega Man X formula one step further by adding in roguelike mechanics, essentially giving the game infinite replay value. Don’t worry about mastering 20XX in a week and having nothing else to do afterward, there are plenty of modes to keep the best players happy. In addition to this, the developers have also confirmed that all DLC for 20XX will be free on consoles going forward.

Along with the main campaign mode, there are also daily and weekly challenges to take on, with their own leader boards and difficulties. There is even a two player mode with both local and online co-op. It works well even given the fact that it can be rather chaotic. It was a nice addition that didn’t have to be there, but it was a very nice thing to have nonetheless.

  • Procedural generation is sometimes lambasted as a cheap alternative to intricate level design, and 20XX doesn't always do enough to break that stereotype. But despite its inconsistent level make-ups and underwhelming boss designs, 20XX is still an engrossing side-scroller that perfects the feeling of navigating dangerous, pitfall and enemy-filled stages.

  • 20XX has a great edifice to create its own identity. The colorful characters and boss fights help amplify the experience. But the heavy use of gameplay elements found in Mega Man X helps generate more appeal for Capcom's franchise. 20XX is a difficult and fun rouge action game that will challenge platforming veterans and delight traditional Mega Man fans.

  • Outside of the main runs, 20XX also features co-op and weekly leaderboard challenges in runs built from randomly generated level seeds. These should serve as a nice distraction for most, and playing a Mega Man style game in co-op feels unique. These will probably be the aspects of 20XX I return to the most, though even they may eventually wear out their welcome.

  • 20XX is a game that is well worth its value. It is a fine entry point to ease you into the core Mega Man universe, and a fun space filler for those who are waiting in anticipation for the Mega Man X Legacy Collection. I do realise that I have banged on about the similarities between this game and the franchise that heavily influences it quite a lot in this review. However, that seems to be the point and ambition of the game in the first place – to hold the reins when no one else can control the carriage.

  • If you’re a fan of platform games or roguelikes, 20XX comes highly recommended. And if you’re a fan of Mega Man it’s pretty much essential. It’s a good-looking game with plenty of content, but it is its gameplay that really makes it stand out. Precise and enjoyable, it gives the old-fashioned platform genre the shot in the arm that it needed by adding an ample dose of unpredictabilty and depth.

  • Despite its difficulty fluctuations and some minor design issues with its procedurally generated content, 20XX offers a solid Mega Man-like action platformer that plays well and is distinct enough to stand out. There’s a lot of diverse content to work through, with heaps of upgrades to chase after and several enemy variations to keep you on your toes. It’s just a shame that its few issues hold it back slightly in the long run.

  • Although 20XX does, unfortunately, wear out its welcome as a roguelike after some extended play, there’s no denying that it performs its duties as a Mega Man X-esque platformer incredibly well. Unless the potential for the game to become somewhat stale after a while is something that concerns you — which, in all honesty, shouldn’t totally be a make-or-break factor — this is probably something that you’ll, at the very least, want to check out if you’re itching for some quality Blue Bomber action.
