Critic Reviews
- Genshin Impact remains an unbelievable proposition as a free to play title, and the PS5 version of it remains the best way to check it out on consoles for now, in spite of several missed opportunities for obvious and meaningful upgrades.
Pramath · May 05, 2021 Reviewed on PS5Read full review - Genshin Impact Version 1.4 introduces new ways to interact with the game and spend time in this world. However, for the most part, there is very little to do here that feels like you are progressing a real narrative since your spending your time in mini-games or focusing on hangout events.
Angelus Victor · Mar 31, 2021 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Overall, I greatly enjoyed my time with it, and I plan to continue playing once future updates are implemented. The fact that it can be played for free is also quite impressive given just how much time you can invest in the game, especially with people perhaps staying at home more and being on a budget. All in all, Genshin Impact is a surprisingly solid action RPG adventure!
Audra Bowling · Nov 18, 2020 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - While Genshin Impact is not a perfect game yet, it’s still free-to-play and can offer hours of fun.
Staff Team · Nov 17, 2020 Reviewed onRead full review - Genshin Impact is easily the most impressive free-to-play game on mobile. It offers such a rich world that rivals those of ambitious console and PC games while pacing its content such that mini play sessions using touch controls feel satisfying and worthwhile. There's nothing about Genshin Impact's business model that is new or praiseworthy, but it thankfully doesn't get in the way of enjoying what is otherwise a legitimately amazing open-world adventure.
Campbell Bird · Oct 26, 2020 Reviewed onRead full review - The gameplay is smooth and simplistic, and it works great on all platforms - though I’m still not sure why the PlayStation version can’t be linked to a Mihoyo account so I could play on my phone when I’m not at home (PS Vita version please??) but it’s a small gripe to an otherwise terrific game. If the loading times were a bit better, I’d recommend the PlayStation version a little more, but for now, mobile/PC are the optimal platforms.
Jonathan White · Oct 20, 2020 Reviewed onRead full review - The way it stitches Breath of the Wild and classic JRPGs together is awesome, and the fact that you can enjoy so much of the game for free absolutely still makes it worth playing. Just understand that, at some point, you'll smash into that wall. Maybe if you know it's coming, it won't hurt so much.
Steven Messner · Oct 16, 2020 Reviewed on PCRead full review - Genshin Impact is a remarkable game in many respects, boasting vibrant visuals, a rich, sprawling world, deep systems, and finely-tuned action. Unfortunately, the game’s free-to-play gacha business model often undermines its own sense of adventure and excitement. Genshin Impact is a good -- potentially great -- game locked in a loot box it can’t quite escape.
Nathan Birch · Oct 16, 2020 Reviewed on PS4Read full review - Overall, Genshin Impact is a solid game hampered a bit by the restrictions its free-to-play model imposes. The overall production values are high, and the core gameplay is solid. In particular, the elemental interaction system is a ton of fun and gives the game a distinct personality. But while there's a lot to do, having several chunks of Genshin Impact gated off until you've reached a higher rank is an obnoxious restriction for an open-world game to have--and once you finally do see what lies in those unexplored areas, it's often a bit underwhelming. Still, it's a solid start, and I'll certainly be interested in seeing how Genshin Impact continues to evolve in future updates.
Heidi Kemps · Oct 16, 2020 Reviewed onRead full review - Alien: Blackout successfully follows the Friday Night at Freddy’s formula with an authentic Alien style, complete with surprisingly well-done voice acting and xenomorph animations when things go wrong. However, once you’ve learned the ropes and figured out how to exploit the alien’s AI it becomes much less interesting, and there’s no reason to revisit it.
