- For longtime fans, there are a few new Pokemon added exclusively in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon and there are more catchable, wild Pokemon than previous games. Unfortunately, for people who played Sun and Moon extensively, you will have to go through quite a bit of old content before you get to the newer content towards the end. That said, Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon are the definitive versions of the 4 games.
Justin Sharp · Jan 08, 2018 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Perhaps the next generation, Generation VIII of the franchise, will be the breath of fresh air the series needs. After all, it is planned to be on the Nintendo Switch, which means a ton of new possibilities abound at the developer’s disposal. Perhaps that will be the massive change to the already classic formula the franchise needs. For even a game like Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, which is objectively better than its predecessor, needs a little life breathed into it to escape the tedium.
Robert Grosso · Dec 13, 2017 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - In the end, the caramel center of the Pokémon experience remains unchanged. You raise, collect and fight with a huge amount of Pokémon in a colorful and vibrant world that aggressively ignores the troubling implications this whole system is built upon. Thankfully, Ultra Sun and Moon work to push this well-worn formula even further than the last set of games. I’m regretful about my choice of starter, as Grass types are gutless chumps better suited for utility rather than front-line combat.
James Paley · Dec 04, 2017 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - My verdict on Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon is this. If you want the game with the most stuff, and that let’s you be a Pokemon trainer to the absolute fullest, this is the one for you. If you want the one that opens things up the most, this is the 3DS-era game of choice. But if you want the Pokemon game that just has the straight-up best campaign, start to end, go and stick to last year’s Sun and Moon. The charm of the Alola region is still persistent, either way. The story of Professor Kukui, Lillie, Hau, Team Skull, and everyone else you’ll meet along the way remains one that shouldn’t be missed.
Jay Petrequin · Dec 01, 2017 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are proper send-offs for what could be the last time we see the series on a handheld. Packed with hours of content and a lot more Pokemon to catch, they are more than enough to hold you over until Pokemon Switch.
Daniel R. Miller · Dec 01, 2017 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Despite the many improvements that Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon make on Sun and Moon, I have a hard time calling them “definitive” versions of Generation VII or the Alola region or anything like that. Despite the improvements these games make, there were also plenty of things that, as I’ve stated, changed for the worse, or things that were changed for no real reason, but that didn’t really impact me one way or the other.
Dylan Siegler · Nov 30, 2017 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - It’s nice to see, especially when this game can last close to 50 hours if players are inclined to do almost everything. It’s still a very enjoyable game that kept me interested throughout. The bigger question is, do players want to come back for a second time within a year to see the new content?
Drew Leachman · Nov 30, 2017 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - A fantastic re-visit to the Aloa region of the Pokémon universe that follows the same style as the game's predecessor. With an improved storyline and numerous new side quests to undertake, this is a great addition to the world loved franchise. However, newcomers to the series will struggle to get their head around the new format.
James Thomas · Nov 29, 2017 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - There’s a couple of fun new features implemented in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and it’s the definitive edition for newcomers, but overall there’s not enough to make it worth playing through again for veterans.
Jacob Whritenour · Nov 24, 2017 Reviewed on 3DSRead full review - Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon doesn't deviate much from its predecessor, but makes enough changes to deliver an experience that is notably better.
