  • The truth is that Conquest isn't really all that different to Awakening, but that's a hard thing to complain about. Awakening was a hell of a game, and so too is this. In some ways it's even superior - there's subtle changes to the game's already-excellent presentation, a wider variety of mission objectives than ever and generally more satisfying combat beats. Equally there's a few bits that are worse - things like offspring are poorly justified in the narrative where in Awakening they were central, and I find none of the cast to be as memorable as Awakening's best.

As far as Conquest goes, this one is not for the Fire Emblem novice. This game suggests that you are familiar with many workings of the games and the new additions are explained once and then forgotten about a mission later, leaving you to your own devices. On top of that, no real way to grind for levels or earn money make this one of the most difficult Fire Emblem games I have ever played and at times one of the most tedious.

  • Fire Emblem Fates contains highly entertaining RNG strategy gameplay that will ensure you’ll be on the edge of your seat and fingers crossed every second of play (for better or worse). It also helps that the presentation value is through the roof, containing not only beautiful visuals, but a majestic musical score. In the end, while the narrative is a bit of a letdown, it doesn’t diminish the lasting effects the captivating combat system has to offer.

  • Fire Emblem's gameplay is second to none, but Conquest sports a lackluster narrative and questionable dialogue that brings the whole experience down.

  • From maps and mission objectives to characters and presentation, Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest rarely falters and constantly delights. It is an intense, stimulating and thrilling experience that is a must-buy for anyone who likes a game that challenges them on an intellectual level. As far as tactical strategy games go, it’s hard to see them getting any better anytime soon.

  • ire Emblem Fates: Conquest is an excellent, challenging SRPG that requires a great deal of forethought and precision, rewarding the player for hard choices, and keeping your characters in play. While the story is stronger with more engaging characters, it still feels like another "bad ending" setting up the player to have to purchase the third campaign when it releases in March.

Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest is a rewarding and deep turn-based tactical game with a grand story and characters I liked enough that losing them in combat really stings. The intense difficulty is squarely aimed at veteran Fire Emblem players, and its satisfying campaign is full of variety and challenge. And even though a win or loss can down to sheer luck, I walked away either satisfied or eager to give it another shot.

  • Disappointed as I was, I still enjoyed my time with Conquest. It's got a charming cast of characters that range from vulnerable, to overconfident, to hell-bent on silly pursuits like carb-loading and working out. I fought over two dozen difficult missions that pushed my army--and my brain--to its limit. Conquest is a great game, and I fell for its hardcore lean at times, but when I was backed into a corner after a series of hard fights with no resolution but to lower the difficulty, I wished I was playing Birthright instead.

  • The campaign is a grueling challenge all the way through, but every time I snatched a win from the jaws of defeat I felt an undeniable surge of satisfaction and pride, one that made my victories that much sweeter. If that sounds fun to you, Conquest is the ideal way to play Fire Emblem Fates. If you want all of the fantastic gameplay with less pressure, don’t feel any shame about sticking to Birthright. You can’t go wrong either way.

  • Fire Emblem: Conquest is billed as the "hardcore" side of Fire Emblem Fates, and it doesn't disappoint with its intricate and challenging maps. On top of that, the core of Fire Emblem's relationship mechanics are strong as ever, and the castle hub is a very nice addition. Even if you opt to ignore Birthright, Conquest is a full-featured and satisfying RPG on its own.

    About the game

Two versions of the franchise's new installment offer players an unprecedented choice: fight an opposing force or join the other side and try to make changes from within. For the first time in the series, players take on the role of the main character and command an army, while struggling to decide which path to follow: helping blood relatives or the family that raised him or her.
